What Do You Need To Do ?
Our focus this week — Oct 8-14: “Weathering the Storms”
Today’s MotD: What Do You Need To Do ? What do we need to do while weathering a storm ? Contact friends ? Give ourselves some quiet time ? Take some positive action forward ? Rest ? Make a list ? Re-group ? Assess the storm and its potential outcomes ?
These are all valid options to an important question. We’re encouraged to determine our answer ideally before we’re weathering a storm. To have a plan in place keeps us from going down the rabbit hole when a storm does arrive.
With just about every weight loss system I did, they all had one thing in common: they all suggested we have a plan in place for situations that have the potential to sabotage our progress. For instance, what to do when dining out, or at a neighbor’s potluck, or the office Christmas party, or all the not-so-healthy snacks available in the break room at work, or all the not-so-healthy snacks our spouse has in their secret hiding place that they don’t think we know about, and so on.
By having a plan in place before experiencing any of these scenarios, we have a better chance of success in handling these situations. We can also apply this principle to potential “storms”. Obviously we can’t possibly predict what the storms will be but we can know how we usually react to them and determine now how we want to respond to them in the future.
For instance, what self care can we make sure we implement (naps, deep breathing, walks around the block, doing five minutes of yoga, a few minutes alone—even if it has to be in the bathroom, hot shower) ? What system can we create to help keep us focused during the storm (a task list, delegating, enlisting a support buddy, journaling) ?
To get a clue as to what systems would help us , think back to what worked for us in previous storms ? Or better yet, what DIDN’T work and determine its opposite.
I know for me, mindfulness works best. Reminding myself to STOP, be present in the moment, breathe and ground myself and then ask: what absolutely can or needs to be done right now ? This usually eliminates half of what I THINK can or needs to be done. My goto then is to make a list (pen & paper version) of my options and what actions I could possibly take. Seeing it in front of me gets it out of my head, making it easier for me to more objectively answer that “right now” question.
How about you ? What plan would you create for weathering future storms ? To help you with that…What worked for you in the past ? What didn’t ?
How about you ?

ABOUT THE 2025 Mandalas of the Day
Throughout the year, I’ll be building one large (48”x48”) Tibetan-styled Mandala one piece at a time…one puzzle piece at a time, that is. The mandala design and the reversed puzzle side were printed on artist-quality watercolor paper. The forward facing puzzle side was printed on a 48”x48” wood panel.
Each day, at random, I’ll be painting in watercolors one of the 365 watercolor puzzle pieces, that by the end of the year will become Archangel Mandala #4. Read more about the Archangel Series. The word/message for each piece will be inspired by Melody Beattie’s book “52 Weeks of Conscious Contact”.
Ultimately, the message of this mandala is about how we are all uniquely part of the one.
