Inside Storms

Our focus this week — Oct 8-14: “Weathering the Storms”

Today’s MotD: Inside Storms. What do we need to do while weathering an inside storm ? These are the ones that we experience internally: sadness, anger, resentment, depression, self-hatred, and the like. They can arise slowly or come at us from out of nowhere. Like yesterday, we have options. Our challenge becomes recognizing theses storms when they show up…or better yet, BEFORE they show up.

Like yesterday, we’re encouraged to determine what we need or want during these storms before they occur. To have a plan in place keeps us from going down the rabbit hole when a storm makes its presence known.

For instance, what self care can we make sure we implement (deep breathing, walks around the block, doing five minutes of yoga, a few minutes alone—even if it has to be in the bathroom, hot showers) ? What system can we create to help keep us focused during an inside storm (allotting a block of time to just be with the storm, enlisting a support buddy, journaling about the storm and what it wants/needs, carry on a conversation with the storm) ?

To get a clue as to what system would help us , think back to what worked during previous inside storms ? Or better yet, what DIDN’T work and determine its opposite.

I know for me, I tend to want to stuff or ignore these storms. But when I do, they have a way of escalating, making it impossible to ignore them. I find carrying on a conversation with it (via meditation, walking, taking a shower, or coloring/drawing a mandala, pulling an oracle card with intention) helps bring it to the surface. My dreams tend to become more vivid and/or more memorable when I ignore/stuff these storms. Here too, making it impossible to ignore them.

What I’m realizing as I write this post, is that I don’t have a plan or a system; I usually just wing it. Ideally, the best system, for me, is to monitor myself regularly for the potential of storms on the horizon and rather than ignore them, face them head on so they can be “processed” before they become category 5 storms. So, like yesterday, mindfulness is the key for me here too.

How about you ? What plan would you create for weathering future inside storms ? To help you with that…What worked for you in the past ? What didn’t ?

How about you ?

ABOUT THE 2025 Mandalas of the Day

Throughout the year, I’ll be building one large (48”x48”) Tibetan-styled Mandala one piece at a time…one puzzle piece at a time, that is. The mandala design and the reversed puzzle side were printed on artist-quality watercolor paper. The forward facing puzzle side was printed on a 48”x48” wood panel.

Each day, at random, I’ll be painting in watercolors one of the 365 watercolor puzzle pieces, that by the end of the year will become Archangel Mandala #4. Read more about the Archangel Series. The word/message for each piece will be inspired by Melody Beattie’s book “52 Weeks of Conscious Contact”.

Ultimately, the message of this mandala is about how we are all uniquely part of the one.
