Stretch Your Imagination
Our focus this week — Dec 3-9: “Perspective”
Today’s MotD: Stretch Your Imagination. When faced with a “situation”, we’re encouraged, as an exercise, to use our imagination to take this situation and “blow it way out of proportion”. Take it to the limits and beyond. Now, make it as small as you possibly can. By exploring a full range of possibilities, it gives us the opportunity to observe the situation from a more objective perspective, allowing us to make a more informed decision as to how best to manage the situation.
For instance if we receive an official looking letter in the mail. We have a myriad of choices for our next step. We could toss it, thinking it’s junk mail. We could not open it, fearing what might be inside. We could rip it open in excitement, thinking we just won the lottery. We could rip it open in a panic, like ripping a bandaid off just to get it over with. We could search the inter-web before opening it, thinking this might be legit or a scam. That’s just a few options we could take with this particular situation. By taking an extra moment to assess each of these and many other options, we’ve now put ourselves in observer (neutral) zone. Making a decision from this space, serves us much better than going on autopilot.
For me I’m in the middle of an auditioning process for a play at our local community theater. Last night was the first night of auditions. Tonight is the second (last) night. Yesterday I was all over the place. Earlier in the day I was all set to go to attend. Later in the afternoon, self-doubt set in and I began debating whether to go or not. It took changing my perspective from one of “I’ll never get the part…there are too many great actors in town who are better at it than I am” to reminding myself how much I enjoy doing plays and that I won’t get the part if I don’t show up. Just go and have fun with it.
One thing I did before I walked into the theater last night was set the intention that when I leave the theater, I’ll be happy with my audition and how I did. With that intention in mind, I was very pleased with how I did. Yes there some high caliber auditioners there as well as some that struggled. I just focused on what I was doing and to do it to the best of my abilities.
On my ride home and even up until I went to bed, I was all over the place here too from one end of the spectrum to the other: what if I don’t get it, what if I do, what if I’m offered a different part, blah blah blah. Several times I caught myself spiraling and managed to bring myself back to center, reminding myself that no matter how much I fret, ultimately the decision is up to the director. I’ve done my best.
With regard to tonight’s audition, we were all told last night that we didn’t have to show up for the second night, it’s mainly available for those who couldn’t be there on the first night. I fretted a bit about this too: should I go again tonight or trust that I’ve done enough…and then a whole bunch of “what ifs” followed. When I caught myself spiraling again, I looked at my options from a calmer perspective and decided to go again tonight for two reasons: 1) the director is using different sections of the script than last night, and 2) since I don’t audition very often, this would a great opportunity to practice some more.
Today, I’m much calmer about the whole thing. When I catch myself starting to spiral, I remind myself that spiraling doesn’t serve me, that I am worthy of auditioning regardless of how it turns our, and at the very least I get to play some more and hopefully improve on my skills.
Anyway…
Essentially, we’re encouraged to position ourselves in a more neutral zone by using our imagination to go to extremes (big and small) so as to gain a better perspective on whatever situation we may be faced with today.
How about you ? When a “situation” arises, do you tend to automatically respond the way you usually do ? Do you attempt to look at the “situation” from different perspectives ? Are you open to using your imagination to look at the “situation” from a full range of views to help gain a better perspective on it ?
BTW…Here’s the before…the front and back view of today’s puzzle piece and the pretty ceramic box that holds all my numbers from which I randomly choose each day’s puzzle piece number:

ABOUT THE 2025 Mandalas of the Day
Throughout the year, I’ll be building one large (48”x48”) Tibetan-styled Mandala one piece at a time…one puzzle piece at a time, that is. The mandala design and the reversed puzzle side were printed on artist-quality watercolor paper. The forward facing puzzle side was printed on a 48”x48” wood panel.
Each day, at random, I’ll be painting in watercolors one of the 365 watercolor puzzle pieces, that by the end of the year will become Archangel Mandala #4. Read more about the Archangel Series. The word/message for each piece will be inspired by Melody Beattie’s book “52 Weeks of Conscious Contact”.
Ultimately, the message of this mandala is about how we are all uniquely part of the one.
