An Open Heart
Our focus this week — Dec 24-31: “The Puzzle of Love”
Today’s MotD: An Open Heart. Today, many people in the world are celebrating Christmas. When I think of “an open heart” on this day, I’m reminded of the cartoon version of “The Grinch That Stole Christmas”.
Through most of it, his heart is tiny, cold, and closed. And because of that he has no love, only malice, towards those who celebrate Christmas so joyously. So he plots to spoil their day by stealing all their gifts, decorations, and food. It’s as if to say, “if I’m not happy, I’m going to make sure you’re not happy either”…supporting the adage: misery loves company.
However his plot is spoiled when the people of Whoville joyously celebrate Christmas and each other anyway, even though everything related to Christmas is gone. Hearing the love and joy in their song, he finally “gets” it. He sees the light and his heart begins to open.
And just as he realizes all of the stolen stash is about to plummet off a cliff, his heart grows three times larger and he saves the stash. He then joyously brings it all back to the good people at Whoville, who welcome him back with open arms into the fold. Ultimately, by opening his heart, he saves himself—he allows himself to be lovable and loved.
Whether we celebrate Christmas or not, we are encouraged, this day and every day, to let our hearts open just a little bit more, to let a little bit more light find its way in, to put a little bit more love in our hearts. For it’s when we open our hearts to love others, we allow ourselves to be lovable and loved, and thus love wins all around.
Welcome Christmas. Bring your cheer,
Cheer to all Whos, far and near.Christmas Day is in our grasp
So long as we have hands to grasp.Christmas Day will always be
Just as long as we have we.Welcome Christmas while we stand
Heart to heart and hand in hand.
— closing lines from the cartoon version of “The Grinch that Stole Christmas”
How about you ? Are you ready, willing, and able to open your heart—even a little bit ? What’s one way you could do so ? Are you open to allowing yourself to be loved ?
BTW…Here’s the before…the front and back view of today’s puzzle piece and the pretty ceramic box that holds all my numbers from which I randomly choose each day’s puzzle piece number:

ABOUT THE 2025 Mandalas of the Day
Throughout the year, I’ll be building one large (48”x48”) Tibetan-styled Mandala one piece at a time…one puzzle piece at a time, that is. The mandala design and the reversed puzzle side were printed on artist-quality watercolor paper. The forward facing puzzle side was printed on a 48”x48” wood panel.
Each day, at random, I’ll be painting in watercolors one of the 365 watercolor puzzle pieces, that by the end of the year will become Archangel Mandala #4. Read more about the Archangel Series. The word/message for each piece will be inspired by Melody Beattie’s book “52 Weeks of Conscious Contact”.
Ultimately, the message of this mandala is about how we are all uniquely part of the one.
