Lesson 003: ”I do not understand anything I see in this room [on this street, from this window, in this place].”

Suggested Exercise: take a few moments to casually look around where you are. With an open mind, and without judgment or analysis, apply this idea to all that you notice. “I do not understand this________.” (ie: I do not understand this table. I do not understand that door. I do not understand that house.)
My take on it: Per today’s lesson in the workbook “The point of the exercises is to help you clear your mind of all past associations, to see things exactly as they appear to you now.” At first glance this lesson may seem just like that first one. In actuality it goes a bit broader/deeper. Where “meaning” is what we assign to what we see, “understanding” is the thought system we use to assign the meaning. It’s a subtle distinction.
Right now, I have a view of the inside of my closet where I see a row of shirts and blouses on hangers, hanging from a rod.
With Lesson 1 I would say, “These shirts do not mean anything.”
With Lesson 2 I would say, “I give these shirts all the meaning they have for me.”
With Lesson 3 I would say, “I do not understand these shirts.”
This lesson—this statement—isn’t asking me to deny the shirts or their form. It’s inviting me to, instead, let go of the certainty I have that I know what they are—to be, just for a moment, in this space of not knowing.
Essentially, we’re becoming curious about who the real “I” is that understands and gives meaning to everything I (we) see. We’re taking another small step into the doorway, not to find better answers, but to notice who believes they’re in charge and what thought system are they using.
