Lesson 006: ”I am upset because I see something that is not there.”

AI Reframe: My distress comes from misperceptions, not actual threats.

Suggested Exercise: three or four times today, take a minute to mind search for upsetting thoughts. Apply today’s idea to each of them by naming the form of upset and the perceived source. Keep in mind that there are no small upsets. They are all equally disturbing to our peace of mind.

I am angry at _____________because I see something that is not there.
I am worried about __________ because I see something that is not there.

My take on it: Today’s lesson is similar to yesterday’s where we take a look at our upsets one step deeper than yesterday.

At least today we get a hint as to WHY we’re not upset for the reasons we think: whatever it is that upset us is actually going through an internal filter that mis-interprets what we’re seeing. 99%—well actually, all—of the time it’s done on a subconscious level.

At this point it’s not necessary to determine what that filter is, we just need to know it exists and that it alters our perception, thus contributing to our upset-ness.

Before I even looked at today’s lesson I was already upset about something: I misplaced my computer reading glasses. I went through a range of emotions: annoyance, frustration, worry, agitation, just to name a few. After about 20 minutes of looking, I stopped myself and prayed to St. Anthony to help me find my glasses, turning my quest over to him.

It was then that I read today’s lesson: perfect timing. So here’s how I applied today’s idea to this situation:

I am annoyed at myself for not being more mindful of where I put my glasses because I see something that is not there.
I am agitated about having to use my bifocals because I see something that is not there.

I am frustrated at myself for losing my glasses because I see something that isn’t there.
I am irritated about always losing stuff because I see something that isn’t there.

Like yesterday, today’s lesson begs a question: then what am I actually seeing ? Again like yesterday, it will be revealed as we move through the course. For now, though, know that we’re taking another step forward towards inner peace by recognizing and acknowledging that what we’re upset about has nothing to do with we think we’re seeing…and hopefully minimizing the upset.

btw…I still haven’t found them, but at least I’m calmer about it. 😁

UPDATED 1 Hour Later: Found them! Funny thing…they were right where I left them. 🤪 Thank you, St. Anthony. 🩵

“…all those upsets I think I see are nothing but holograms that will radically change, not by fighting them, not by poking spears into their guts, but when I train my mind to see them differently.”
