Lesson 007: ”I see only the past.”

AI Reframe: Much of what I perceive is colored by past memories and conditioning.

Suggested Exercise: Three or four times today, for about a minute each, indiscriminately look around and for each thing we notice say “I see only the past in this/that __________”.

For example, I see only the past in this chair. I see only the past in that car. I see only the past in this book.

My take on it: This lesson explains the why of the first six lessons. It’s the reason why nothing has no meaning, why we give things meaning, why our thoughts have no meaning, why we’re upset. It’s all because we see things as we saw and experienced them in the past.

The lesson uses a cup as an example. Do we see the cup or are we reviewing our past experiences of picking it up, drinking from it, feeling the cup, having it with a meal and so on ? It proceeds to ask us several questions for us to ponder.

The one that sticks out for me is “What do you know about this cup except what you learned in the past ?” And then states: “You would have no idea what this cup is except for your past learning. Do you, then, really see it ?“

Essentially, this lesson invites us to acknowledge that what we know about each thing we see is based on past experience, instead of seeing and experiencing it anew in THIS moment.

“When I focus on the past, I ignore the astounding love and grace of right now. When I truly experience THIS moment (which is unique in all the world and has never happened before) tears roll down my cheeks. It’s that beautiful. I often don’t notice because I see only the past.”
