Lesson 013: ”A meaningless world engenders fear.”
AI Reframe: When life feels without coherence, it can stir fear.
Suggested Exercise:
Three to four times today, and for about a minute each, close your eyes and repeat today’s idea to yourself. Then open your eyes, look around slowly while repeatedly saying:
I am looking at a meaningless world.
Conclude with closing your eyes and saying to yourself:
A meaningless world engenders fear because I think I am in competition with God.*
Or, you may use an alternate phrase such as:
A meaningless world engenders fear because I think I am in competition with a Higher Truth (Love, Source, Light, etc).

Regardless of which variation of the concluding statement you’re inclined to use, the premise remains the same. When our ego minds are in control—usually without our awareness—we allow them to assign meaning to everything we encounter: people, places, things, situations… all of it.
And when the ego does this, it’s almost always doing so from some version of fear. Let’s be honest: the ego is trying to keep us safe and comfortable, according to its definition of safety. Kudos to the ego for that impulse—it’s a noble intention, truly.
The trouble is, the ego’s knowledge is extremely limited. It can only work with what it has accumulated over time. It has no access to anything beyond itself.
Our work as we move through A Course in Miracles is to recognize this and gently loosen the ego’s grip—to wake up to a Higher Truth and realize that what fear creates has no real meaning. As our awareness expands beyond the ego’s illusions, we gain access to miracles, peace, and love.
For now, though, all we need to know is this: today marks our first real step in understanding the cause and effect of a meaningless world.
And simply noticing this—without judgment—is more than enough for today.
“The purpose of ACIM’s first 50 lessons is to notice that everything my eyes show me is a cardboard cutout. It’s a picture of the past frozen in time, serving as a stand-in for the real thing.”
— “The Course in Miracles Experiment” by Pam Grout
* The Course addresses any resistance we may have with the initial concluding statement. It states:
You may find it difficult to avoid resistance, in one form or another, to this concluding statement. Whatever form such resistance may take, remind yourself that you are really afraid of such a thought because of the “vengeance” of the “enemy.” You are not expected to believe the statement at this point, and will probably dismiss it as preposterous. Note carefully, however, any signs of overt or covert fear which it may arouse.
This is our first attempt at stating an explicit cause and effect relationship of a kind which you are very inexperienced in recognizing. Do not dwell on the concluding statement, and try not even to think of it except during the practice periods. That will suffice at present.(ACIM, W-13.5:1–6:3)
