Lesson 015: ”My thoughts are images that I have made.”

AI Reframe: The mind creates internal pictures based on interpretation.

Suggested Exercise: At least three times, but no more than four, take a minute, first to state today’s idea:

My thoughts are images that I have made.

…then randomly look at different objects around you. While holding your gaze, slowly state:

This ______ is an image that I have made.

“I Choose to Open New Eyes”

This lesson is an introductory step toward becoming more aware of just how much our thoughts affect our vision. Left unchecked, the ego-mind generates thoughts and then gives itself permission to assign meaning to everything we see—shaping not only how we look at the world, but how we experience it.

For example: I have this adorable Winnie the Pooh salt and pepper shaker set that I bought years ago. I’ve never actually used it as a salt and pepper shaker—it’s always been a knickknack. About a month ago, my husband innocently ran them through the dishwasher, and much of Pooh’s red shirt and his black facial features melted or broke off. I’m still keeping them, though, because I still see them as cute. They make me smile.

Here’s the thing. According to A Course in Miracles, this set is neutral. It has no meaning in and of itself. But because I love all things Winnie the Pooh, I’ve assigned it sentimental value. And that’s okay.

The Course isn’t telling us what we should love or hate (though, as a general vibe, it definitely leans toward love). What it’s asking is that we notice where our thoughts are coming from—and recognize that our thoughts about everything affect how we see.

So in the case of my salt and pepper shakers, I understand that when I look at them, I’m the one consciously assigning their meaning. Which also means that, over time, I could assign a different meaning to them—and in doing so, change how I see them. I’m okay with that. And so is The Course. It’s the awareness that matters.

Essentially, we’re just practicing more noticing.
No judgment. No fixing. Just seeing.
