Lesson 022: ”What I see is a form of vengeance.”
AI Reframe: I often perceive the world through fear, conflict, or defense.
Suggested Exercise:
At least five times today, look at the world around you for at least a minutes. As you eyes slowly move from one thing to another, say to yourself:
I see only the perishable.
I see nothing that will last.
What I see is not real.
What I see is a form of vengeance.
At the end of the practice, ask yourself:
Is this the world I really want to see ?

Wow. “Vengeance” seems a bit harsh, don’t you think ? I suspect a big part of it is to get our attention because this is an important shift in our journey and The Course wants to make sure we learn it. Even though they use the word “vengeance”, it’s not about eye-for-an-eye melodrama, revenge, or grudge-making. It’s about recognizing that as long as we are coming from a place of anger (mild irritation—>downright rage), we’re going to see and experience the world through that false lens.
How this plays out is generally in a loop. Our ego-mind gets triggered with an “angry” thought. It feels like an attack against our peace, so we project it out into the world, perceiving it as self-defense. Until we decide to change how we see, we’ll find ourselves in this perpetual state of attacks and counter-attacks.
In The Course’s view we’ve just created a fantasy world, something that’s not real and not based in love. Where’s the peace of mind in all of that ?
If it helps to grasp this lesson better, here are some other ways to look at today’s idea, a more gentle translation, if you will:
What I see is filtered through judgment.
What I see reflects my inner conflict.
What I see is my mind attempting to protect itself through blame.
What I see is shaped by fear, not truth.
What I see is a call for healing, not revenge.
To use Pam Grout’s words: today is a day to celebrate “the joyous news that my countless fears and critical thoughts are NOT REAL”.
“This lesson also celebrates the joyous news that my countless fears and critical thoughts are NOT REAL…Five times today, I look around and acknowledge that all I fear does not exist.”
