Lesson 039: ”My holiness is my salvation.”
AI Reframe: Returning to inner integrity brings me freedom.
Suggested Practice:
At least four, five-minute practice sessions are urged. Start with stating today’s idea. Then close your eyes. Bring to mind “any unloving thoughts in whatever form they appear; uneasiness, depression, anger, fear, worry, attack, insecurity, and so on. Whatever form they take, they are unloving and therefore fearful. And so it is from them that you need to be saved.”
For each unloving thought, apply the idea in this way:
My unloving thoughts about ___________ are keeping me in hell. My holiness is my salvation.
At the end of each session, repeat the original idea and then add:
If guilt is hell, what is its opposite ?
Shorter periods throughout the day (three-four or more an hour, ideally) are also urged. You can state the idea or the question, or both. As situations arise the trigger unloving thoughts during the day, you can apply the idea this way:
My holiness is my salvation from this.

From the Lesson:
“Your holiness [light, inner wisdom] is the answer to every question that was ever asked, is being asked now, or will be asked in the future. ²Your holiness [light, inner wisdom] means the end of guilt, and therefore the end of hell. ³Your holiness [light, inner wisdom] is the salvation of the world, and your own.⁴How could you to whom your holiness belongs be excluded from it?” (ACIM, W-39.4:1-4)
Over the last couple of lessons, I’ve gained a better understanding and have become more comfortable with using the term “my holiness”. Today they present a new (triggering-to-me) term: salvation. Seeing it at first reminded me of my religious upbringing, where we were trained to believe we were sinners who must forever repent and behave in order to be saved and allowed into heaven. Such drama. Such trauma.
Thankfully the lesson clears up its meaning as part of explaining today’s practice:
“²Then, with closed eyes, search out your unloving thoughts in whatever form they appear; uneasiness, depression, anger, fear, worry, attack, insecurity and so on. ³Whatever form they take, they are unloving and therefore fearful. ⁴And so it is from them that you need to be saved.” (ACIM, W-39.6:2-4)
Which brings me to the third triggering word: guilt. Seeing that word brings up a memory from my mid-20s. After about ten minutes of telling my very first therapist, at my very first session, why I was there, she stopped me. “Are you Catholic ?” she asked. Stunned, hesitant, and curious, I replied: “Yes”. She stated “48% of the women I see are Catholics, another 48% are Jewish, the remaining 4% fall into a variety of religions or else they’re atheists. Guilt is the common denominator in both of those religions. Freeing you from that guilt is where we’ll start.” Thus began a three-year journey towards that freedom.
In the lesson, guilt is presented within a question: If guilt is hell, what is its opposite ? What?!? At first I searched my brain for an answer, to no avail. In re-reading the lesson to see if I missed something, I questioned why the question was even there in the first place. When I stopped to ponder its presence, it dawned on me that maybe it’s not meant to be answered today at all, but instead planted like a marker — something we’ll recognize later as the lessons unfold.
If I were to sum up The Course based on where we are right now, I would say it this way:
Learning how to notice our thoughts — and gently questioning who is doing the noticing — feels like the key that begins to open the door to peace, love, and joy.
“Lesson 39…provides a simple tool to overcome the ego’s default position of bracing for disaster.”
