Lesson 048: ”There is nothing to fear.”

AI Reframe: Fear dissolves when I remember what’s truly stable.

Suggested Practice:
Today’s practice is very short, very simple, and very frequent: merely repeat today’s idea as often as possible.

There is nothing to fear.

Use it with eyes open any time and in any situation.

There is nothing to fear.

It is strongly recommended that you do it with eyes closed as well, repeating the idea slowly.

There is nothing to fear.

Use it immediately if anything disturbs your peace of mind.

There is nothing to fear.

Message

Today’s idea is on my “Top Five Favorite Messages from A Course in Miracles” list. As the practice suggests, it’s very short, very simple, and very frequent. While it is simple, for some it may not be easy. I can hear the “yes, buts” from all across the globe—well…from my ego-mind, at least.

The beauty of this idea is twofold for me.

1) We can focus on the “nothing” part. The Course reminds us that there is NOTHING to fear, especially when we trust that God* is our strength and that nothing real can be threatened.

I’m reminded of Susan Jeffers’ book “Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway”. In it she explains the roots of our fears. The most powerful is that we fear we can’t handle “it”. For instance, a parent believing they wouldn’t be able to handle it if anything bad happened to any of their children. They turn that fear into overprotectiveness and control.

2) Altering the idea to “There is no-thing to fear” gives more insight. Fear has no substance. It’s a thought. Our ego-mind creates it in an attempt to keep itself safe and comfortable.

This reminds me of the different acronyms people use for the word fear. My favorite—and very much aligned with ACIM—”False Evidence Appearing Real.” Our ego-mind creates the false evidence and then believes it to be real.

For instance, due to a traumatic childhood incident in the early 1960s, I took on a paralyzing fear of heights from that point on. Thirty years later, my husband and I planned a trip to Europe. Tired of letting my fear keep me from doing things like going up the Empire State Building, or going on high rides at amusement parks, or even going up a ladder, I went to a hypnotherapist to “cure” me of my fear. I wanted to be able to go up the Eiffel Towel and enjoy it.

Six weeks later we were in Paris riding the elevator to the top section of the tower. I was nervous, but not terrified. When the doors opened at the top, the nervousness instantly went away. With joyful, childlike energy I ran around the platform—enjoying the view and my freedom. I even asked my husband to capture the moment—proof that I was smiling at a height that once would have done me in.

A few weeks later, we were having a blast riding ALL the rides at an amusement park—well…except the spinning rides, they’re just nauseating.

So what changed ? My perception and healing of the initial trauma. While the trauma itself was real to me, the fear I held onto for all those years was not. It turned out, the fear was

Nothing.

*NOTE: If it helps with today’s message, feel free to use whatever “God” term that best resonates with/for you.

“While it seems really dense and bogged down in words, A Course In Miracles can be summarized like this: ‘The universe has my back and everything’s going to be okay.”
