Today’s lesson makes this bold proclamation:
”[Today’s idea] is the answer to every problem that will confront you, today and tomorrow and throughout time. ²In this world, you believe you are sustained by everything but God. ³Your faith is placed in the most trivial and insane symbols; pills, money, “protective” clothing, influence, prestige, being liked, knowing the “right” people, and an endless list of forms of nothingness that you endow with magical powers.
“All these things are your replacements for the Love of God. ²All these things are cherished to ensure a body identification. ³They are songs of praise to the ego. ⁴Do not put your faith in the worthless. ⁵It will not sustain you.”(ACIM, W-50.1:1–2:5)
This hit close to home. I’ve used similar activities—retail therapy, binging food—thinking they would sustain me. They did…for a minute. But never for long.
I got triggered by this next line. It brought back the indoctrination of my childhood religion—the insistence that they alone could save me, and that obedience was non-negotiable. I can still recite the answers they drilled into us every… blessed…day.
”Only the Love of God will protect you in all circumstances.” (ACIM, W-50.3:1)
What eased the anxiety was what came next. It put the “Love of God” in proper context for me.
”Put not your faith in illusions. ²They will fail you. ³Put all your faith in the Love of God within you; eternal, changeless and forever unfailing. ⁴This is the answer to whatever confronts you today. ⁵Through the Love of God within you, you can resolve all seeming difficulties without effort and in sure confidence. ⁶Tell yourself this often today. ⁷It is a declaration of release from the belief in idols. ⁸It is your acknowledgment of the truth about yourself.” (ACIM, W-50.4:1-8)
What also helped me was replacing the term “Love of God” with “Divine Wisdom”, as in “Put all your faith in the Divine Wisdom within you.” The “within you” part is what shifted my perception. Instead of feeling like I had to bow down to some entity far, far away from me, I felt this glow of warmth radiating from within, filling my whole body with peace, knowing I am connected to this most powerful of energies. One that has the potential to sustain me in all things when I remember it is there—always, in all ways.
Today’s idea may feel lofty—maybe even out of reach. That’s okay. I mean, think about it. In the last 50 days we’ve climbed an ethereal ladder, beginning with the disorienting idea that “Nothing I see…means anything,” and arriving here—where we’re asked to place our faith in the highest part of ourselves, whether we knew it existed or not. So…give yourself some grace.
In perfect timing, the next ten days are devoted to reviewing all 50 lessons. In the process, we’ll have the opportunity to absorb even deeper, the heart and soul of these potentially life-changing ideas.
And in the end, it always comes back to this:
“Nothing real can be threatened.
Nothing unreal exists.
Herein lies the peace of God.”
