Lesson 070: ”My salvation* comes from me.”

AI Reframe: My freedom comes from shifting my own perspective.

Suggested Exercise:
Two 10-15 minutes practices today. Begin by repeating today’s idea and then adding a statement acknowledging that you recognize that salvation is an inside job—not outside of you. For example:

My salvation* comes from me. It cannot come from anywhere else.

Then with eyes closed, think of places from your past where you’ve looked outside of yourself for salvation: other people, possessions, in various situations and events, and in self-concepts that you sought to make it real. Recognize now that they are not real and then tell yourself:

My salvation* cannot come from any of these things. My salvation* comes from me and only from me.

“Now, try again to reach the light in you, which is where your salvation* is. You cannot find it in the clouds that surround the light, and it is in them you have been killing for it. It is not there. It is past the clous and in the light beyond. Remember that you have to go through the clouds before you can reach the light.”

“Since all illusions of salvation have failed you, surely you do not want to remain in the clouds, looking vainly for idols there, when you could so waste walk on into the light of real salvation. Try to pass the clouds by whatever means appeals to you.”

For the short and frequent practice periods, remember that you are in charge of your salvation—and the world’s. Say, then:

My salvation* comes from me. Nothing outside of me can hold me back. Within me is the world’s salvation* and my own.

*Salvation is simply the choice to let go of guilt and see the world—and everyone in it—through the eyes of love, thereby waking up from the dream of separation.

Message

This lesson defies everything that was programmed into me growing up in a strict religious environment.

First, we were born with original sin. Then, around seven, we learned about confession. We’d enter a booth and recite, “Bless me Father for I have sinned. It has been ___________ (how long) since my last confession.” We’d declare our sins, and the priest would assign penance—a set number of prayers. If our sins were really “bad,” we had to say the rosary.

In this scenario, not only did we have to confess to another human being, we also had to keep track of the time between confessions—which only incited more guilt if it had been too long.

When I was 15, my mom commanded, “Make sure you go to confession before Easter.” I asked her, “Why can’t I just talk to God directly?” Aghast, she told me to go talk to the priest.

The next Sunday, I did. His reply: “Because priests are descendants of Jesus’s apostles. Jesus instructed them to go out and save men’s sins.”

Even though this wasn’t a term back in the 60s, the best way to describe how I felt about his answer is: lame. That was the first major crack in my faith in the church.

Now, with today’s lesson, I finally have an answer to my question. I alone am responsible for my salvation*. As a matter of fact—at least with ACIM—I don’t even have to confess to God. It’s totally an inside job.

From the lesson:

“[Accepting today’s idea] means that nothing outside yourself can save you; nothing outside yourself can give you peace. But it also means that nothing outside yourself can hurt you, or disturb your peace or upset you in any way. Today’s idea places you in charge of the universe, where you belong because of what you are.” (W-70.2:1-5)

My salvation* comes from within, and nothing but my own thoughts can hamper my progress.

* Salvation is simply the choice to let go of guilt and see the world—and everyone in it—through the eyes of love, thereby waking up from the dream of separation.

“Lesson 70…says guilt is an invention of my mind….it leads me to separate myself from the whole and to believe that this, this limited viewfinder filled with individual beings, is what I have to work with.”
