Lesson 076: ”I am under no laws but God’s.”

AI Reframe: I’m not bound by the fear-based rules I invented.

Suggested Exercise:
From the lesson:

“We will begin the longer practice periods today with a short review of the different kinds of “laws” we have believed we must obey. ²These would include, for example, the “laws” of nutrition, of immunization, of medication, and of the body’s protection in innumerable ways. ³Think further; you believe in the “laws” of friendship, of “good” relationships and reciprocity. ⁴Perhaps you even think that there are laws which set forth what is God’s and what is yours. ⁵Many “religions” have been based on this. ⁶They would not save but damn in Heaven’s name. ⁷Yet they are no more strange than other “laws” you hold must be obeyed to make you safe.” (ACIM, W-76.8:1-7)

Then you will open your mind to listen to the Voice of Truth regarding “laws”. It will tell you about the Love the Universe has for you. About the endless joy Source offers you. About how you are a creative channel of the Creator. Repeat today’s idea until you have listed and understood there are no laws but God’s*.

I am under no laws but God’s.*

Throughout the day, repeat this idea at least four-fives times an hour as well as in response to any temptation to experience ourselves as subject to other laws throughout the day.

* The Course defines “Him[God]” as an impersonal, formless, and infinite principle of pure Love. Substitute whatever term that resonates best and allows you to receive the message.

Message

In order to fully embrace today’s lesson, we need to clarify what is meant by God’s law and how it differs from the ego’s law. Two adages help with this: “Render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s” and “Be in this world not of it.”

In the ego-world, we operate in physical form—outside our true Self, focused on bodies and external events. In the ACIM world, we operate in thoughts, beliefs, and purpose. So when the Course talks about being in this world but not of it, it means going about your day doing what you do, just from a higher place of peace, love, and joy.

Take being stuck in traffic. You have two choices in how you respond. You can stew in your ego-mind of grievances, robbing yourself of peace. Or you can see the light in the situation—it is what it is—and keep your peace.

Doing this practice today made me realize something: my fears and limiting beliefs are also laws my ego has created. And they fly in the face of God’s law.

Saying we’re under no laws but God’s simply means we choose to stay in our true state—peace, love, and joy—in all things.

This isn’t easy, especially for anyone new to the Course. Today’s idea is the ideal state these lessons are teaching us. Any steps forward in that direction bring us closer to our happiness.

“This lesson offers freedom. It asks me to clean out the junk drawer, to examine the mad beliefs that run my life.
