Lesson 085: ”REVIEW: My grievances hide the light of the world in me. My salvation comes from me.”
AI Reframe: I’m remembering my purpose is rooted in peace, not struggle.
From the Review:
“The longer practice periods will follow this general form: Take about fifteen minutes for each of them, and begin by thinking about the ideas for the day, and the comments that are included in the assignments. ²Devote some three or four minutes to reading them over slowly, several times if you wish, and then close your eyes and listen.”
”Repeat the first phase of the exercise period if you find your mind wandering, but try to spend the major part of the time listening quietly but attentively. ²There is a message waiting for you. ³Be confident that you will receive it.⁴Remember that it belongs to you, and that you want it.”(ACIM, W-rII.in.2:1–3:4)
“Reaffirm your determination [to fulfill your function] in the shorter practice periods as well, using the original form of the idea for general applications, and more specific forms when needed.” (ACIM, W-rII.in.6:1)
For Lesson 69: My grievances* hide the light of the world in me.
“²My grievances show me what is not there, and hide from me what I would see. ³Recognizing this, what do I want my grievances for? ⁴They keep me in darkness and hide the light. ⁵Grievances and light cannot go together, but light and vision must be joined for me to see. ⁶To see, I must lay grievances aside. ⁷I want to see, and this will be the means by which I will succeed.” (ACIM, W-85.1:2-7)
For Lesson 70: My salvation** comes from me.
“²Today I will recognize where my salvation** is. ³It is in me because its Source is there. ⁴It has not left its Source, and so it cannot have left my mind. ⁵I will not look for it outside myself. ⁶It is not found outside and then brought in. ⁷But from within me it will reach beyond, and everything I see will but reflect the light that shines in me and in itself.” (ACIM, W-85.3:2-7)
* A grievance is anything that overshadows, blocks, or disconnects me from my true Self: love, peace, and joy. It’s the insane decision to hold onto the chains (the past) because we’re afraid that letting them go would mean disappearing into a light we don’t yet trust.
** Salvation is simply the choice to let go of guilt and see the world—and everyone in it—through the eyes of love, thereby waking up from the dream of separation.

Message
From previous review lessons, we established:
- I can accept that I am the light of the world.
- My function is to light up the world with this light.
- While doing so, I recognize and acknowledge the light in everyone.
- I am encouraged to act as the light I am.
- I do that by being happy and doing what makes me happy—as Love would have me do.
- When fear or grievances diminish my light, I remember who I am: Love, which transforms all grievances.
Today we add two more ideas to our True Self Identity:
- My grievances hide the light of the world in me.
- My salvation comes from me.
While my ego-mind creates the grievances, my True Self saves me from them.
This week I’m participating in an online decluttering challenge. Today is day four. Each day we move three things—that’s it.
My all-or-nothing ego mind wants to declutter the whole room. If I follow its lead, halfway through I’d want to quit because the task would become overwhelming and I’d burn out before finishing. That leaves the space even more cluttered, and I end up with a new grievance toward myself about not being able to finish what I started.
Instead, by doing as instructed, I spend less than five minutes on the task. On day one, what I moved hardly made a difference. By day three, though, I can see almost the whole tabletop. More importantly—and here’s where today’s lesson comes in—when I look at that less-cluttered space, I feel calmer and, dare I say it, happier.
That’s when it dawned on me about the effects of grievances on us and our world. Grievances are like clutter. They create harmful feelings—stress, anxiety, guilt—not only in us but in anyone else sharing that space. As we release our grievances and clutter—what ACIM calls salvation—we align with the peace and joy of our True Selves. In clearing the clutter, I was clearing grievances—and proving to myself that my salvation truly does come from me.
Given that it’s a choice, why would we wallow in grievances when we could be happy?
