Lesson 086: ”REVIEW: Only God’s plan for salvation will work. Holding grievances is an attack on God’s plan for salvation.”

AI Reframe: When I choose to see through peace, light returns.

Suggested Exercise:

From the Review:
“The longer practice periods will follow this general form: Take about fifteen minutes for each of them, and begin by thinking about the ideas for the day, and the comments that are included in the assignments. ²Devote some three or four minutes to reading them over slowly, several times if you wish, and then close your eyes and listen.

”Repeat the first phase of the exercise period if you find your mind wandering, but try to spend the major part of the time listening quietly but attentively. ²There is a message waiting for you. ³Be confident that you will receive it.⁴Remember that it belongs to you, and that you want it.”(ACIM, W-rII.in.2:1–3:4)

“Reaffirm your determination [to fulfill your function] in the shorter practice periods as well, using the original form of the idea for general applications, and more specific forms when needed.” (ACIM, W-rII.in.6:1)

For Lesson 71: Only God’s plan for salvation will work.

“²It is senseless for me to search wildly about for salvation. ³I have seen it in many people and in many things, but when I reached for it, it was not there. ⁴I was mistaken about where it is. ⁵I was mistaken about what it is. ⁶I will undertake no more idle seeking. ⁷Only God’s plan for salvation will work. ⁸And I will rejoice because His plan can never fail.” (ACIM, W-86.1:2-8)

For Lesson 72: Holding grievances* is an attack on God’s plan for salvation**.

“²Holding grievances is an attempt to prove that God’s plan for salvation will not work. ³Yet only His plan will work. ⁴By holding grievances, I am therefore excluding my only hope of salvation from my awareness. ⁵I would no longer defeat my own best interests in this insane way. ⁶I would accept God’s plan for salvation, and be happy.” (ACIM, W-86.3:2-6)

* A grievance is anything that overshadows, blocks, or disconnects me from my true Self: love, peace, and joy. It’s the insane decision to hold onto the chains (the past) because we’re afraid that letting them go would mean disappearing into a light we don’t yet trust.

** Salvation is simply the choice to let go of fear, guilt, and all misperceptions so that the world—and everyone in it—can be seen through the eyes of love, thereby waking up from the dream of separation.

Message

From previous review lessons, we established:

  • I can accept that I am the light of the world.
  • My function is to light up the world with this light.
  • While doing so, I recognize and acknowledge the light in everyone.
  • I am encouraged to act as the light I am.
  • I do that by being happy and doing what makes me happy—as Love would have me do.
  • When fear or grievances diminish my light, I remember who I am: Love, which transforms all grievances.
  • I realize the ego-mind creates the grievances that hide my light and that my True Self saves me from them.

Today we add two more ideas to our True Self Identity:

  • Only God’s plan for salvation will work.
  • Holding grievances is an attack on God’s plan for salvation.

During practice, this visual came to mind:

I’m looking through a large picture window at a grand view of the world. It looks dark and dreary. The people walking look miserable. Whatever lights I can see are muted. Even the sun lacks its usual brilliance.

I place my palm on the window as if to send positive energy to this sad world. When I pull it away, I see that my palm is dirty and notice that the view looks brighter where my palm had been.

Now I get to choose. I can continue viewing the world through this dirty window even though I now know it’s an illusion. Or I can wipe the window clean and see the world as it truly is: beautiful, vibrant, and full of light.

In this scenario, grievances are the film of dirt on the window. Choosing to continue viewing the world through this dirty window “attacks” God’s plan for us—to see and be the light. God’s plan is the window cleaner that clears away our misperceptions so that we see only light—the only solution, the only plan, that will clean the window.

Essentially, the ball is in our court. Now that we know what grievances do, we can keep things as they are or wipe them away.

For instance, let’s say I get angry because someone cuts me off in traffic. I’m now seeing that driver through my “dirty” window of grievance. As far as I can tell, my anger is unbeknownst to them, while I suffer.

I could escalate things—honk my horn, yell, or take some other action to express my anger. Do any of these plans bring me back to peace? The ego-mind might think they do, but we all know they don’t.

Or I could choose to ask the Holy Spirit to help me see this person differently. The mere act of asking can bring me back to neutral. Receiving the HS’s answer can bring me back to peace.

“I choose to look deeper and perceive only light.”
