Lesson 087: ”I will there be light. There is no will but God’s.”

AI Reframe: Fear-made rules fall away when I allow guidance in.

Suggested Exercise:

From the Review:

“The longer practice periods will follow this general form: Take about fifteen minutes for each of them, and begin by thinking about the ideas for the day, and the comments that are included in the assignments. ²Devote some three or four minutes to reading them over slowly, several times if you wish, and then close your eyes and listen.

”Repeat the first phase of the exercise period if you find your mind wandering, but try to spend the major part of the time listening quietly but attentively. ²There is a message waiting for you. ³Be confident that you will receive it.⁴Remember that it belongs to you, and that you want it.”(ACIM, W-rII.in.2:1–3:4)

“Reaffirm your determination [to fulfill your function] in the shorter practice periods as well, using the original form of the idea for general applications, and more specific forms when needed.” (ACIM, W-rII.in.6:1)

For Lesson 73: I will there be light.

”²I will use the power of my will today. ³It is not my will to grope about in darkness, fearful of shadows and afraid of things unseen and unreal. ⁴Light shall be my guide today. ⁵I will follow it where it leads me, and I will look only on what it shows me. ⁶This day I will experience the peace of true perception.” (ACIM, W-87.1:2-6)

For Lesson 74: There is no will but God’s*.

”²I am safe today because there is no will but God’s. ³I can become afraid only when I believe there is another will. ⁴I try to attack only when I am afraid, and only when I try to attack can I believe that my eternal safety is threatened. ⁵Today I will recognize that all this has not occurred. ⁶I am safe because there is no will but God’s.” (ACIM, W-87.3:2-6)

* The Course defines “Him[God]” as an impersonal, formless, and infinite principle of pure Love. Substitute whatever term that resonates best and allows you to receive the message. God’s will for us is happiness.

Message

This is a strong draft. The conversational structure works because it demonstrates the lesson’s point rather than merely explaining it. Here’s a tightened version with direct feedback.

Tightened version:

From previous reviews:

  • I am the light of the world.
  • My function is to light up the world with this light.
  • I recognize and acknowledge the light in everyone.
  • I act as the light I am—by being happy and doing what makes me happy, as Love would have me do.
  • When fear or grievances diminish my light, I remember who I am: Love, which transforms all grievances.
  • The ego-mind creates the grievances that hide my light; my True Self saves me from them.
  • Knowing this, I choose between hiding my light or shining it.

Today we add two more ideas:

  • I will there be light.
  • There is no will but God’s.

All day I put off today’s lesson, fretting about what I would write. The “ick” factor about “God’s Will” triggered again. Why do I have to do what God says? What about what I want?

As I write this, I recognize my ego-mind’s energy behind those words. I let its will be done. No light, no peace—just worry, anxiety, more fretting. Then it hit me: if I do the exercise—ask for help—I’ll get my answer. Turns out that’s the whole point of today’s lesson.

I don’t have to go it alone.
I don’t have to figure things out on my own.
I don’t have to write this post all on my own.

In the practice, I turned it over: What’s the message of today’s lesson? Help me see it differently.

Almost immediately, I found myself in a conversation with God.

G: Are you happy?
Me: For the most part.
G: What’s stopping you from being completely happy?
Me: The idea of writing this post.
G: Do you want me to help you?
Me: I feel like I’m supposed to do it myself. For credibility purposes.
G: So for the post to be authentic, you have to do it yourself?
Me: Yes.
G: What do you think the lesson is talking about today?
Me: That we make it our will to see the light in all things, to see past the ego’s illusions.
G: Is that something you can do on your own?
Me: Sometimes. A driver cut us off today, and rather than stew, I “willed the light” and released it in less than a minute.
G: What did that do for you?
Me: I returned to peace quickly.
G: What about today’s lesson and this post?
Me: All day it nagged me—or rather, I let it nag me. Thirty minutes ago, I knew I had to do something or the day would end before I completed both the post and my mandala. The deadline “forced” me to do the exercise.
G: So it wasn’t a peaceful or joyful decision to move forward.
Me: No. But within minutes, I realized I don’t have to write this alone. I can ask for help from You and the Holy Spirit. That’s when this conversation started.
G: Are you happy?
Me: Surprisingly, yes.
G: Why?
Me: Because Your will for me is to be happy. When I will to see the light in a situation, the light appears, peace prevails. I remembered that this afternoon while driving, but I forgot it with regard to this lesson.
G: Why?
Me: I let my limiting belief—that my ego-mind “should” do this alone—convince me that asking for help is cheating.
G: How has that changed?
Me: Now I get it. Since You want me to be happy, why wouldn’t I seek Your help? You have a far grander view than my little mind. Allowing myself to ask for help changed how I saw writing this post. That’s the point of this lesson, isn’t it?
G: By George, I think she’s got it.
Me: Cute. Thank you.
G: My pleasure.
Me: I’d hug You if that were possible.
G: Go hug your dog instead—see what I did there?
Me: Yes. 😁

Here’s what I learned today. “I will there be light” meant asking for the light—to see it differently. “There is no will but God’s” meant recognizing that what I thought I wanted—to prove I could do this alone—was just the ego’s will for misery. God’s will was help. So I chose that.

“In the Field of Infinite Potentiality…we exist in countless dimensions, but because we’re focused on this one material dimension, we miss a lot of blessings, miracles, signs, and possibilities.”
