Lesson 088: REVIEW ”The light has come. I am under no laws but God’s.”
AI Reframe: My real function simplifies everything: return to clarity.
Suggested Exercise:
From the Review:
“The longer practice periods will follow this general form: Take about fifteen minutes for each of them, and begin by thinking about the ideas for the day, and the comments that are included in the assignments. ²Devote some three or four minutes to reading them over slowly, several times if you wish, and then close your eyes and listen.”
”Repeat the first phase of the exercise period if you find your mind wandering, but try to spend the major part of the time listening quietly but attentively. ²There is a message waiting for you. ³Be confident that you will receive it.⁴Remember that it belongs to you, and that you want it.”(ACIM, W-rII.in.2:1–3:4)
“Reaffirm your determination [to fulfill your function] in the shorter practice periods as well, using the original form of the idea for general applications, and more specific forms when needed.” (ACIM, W-rII.in.6:1)
For Lesson 75: The light has come.
“²In choosing salvation** rather than attack, I merely choose to recognize what is already there. ³Salvation is a decision made already. ⁴Attack and grievances*** are not there to choose. ⁵That is why I always choose between truth and illusion; between what is there and what is not. ⁶The light has come. ⁷I can but choose the light, for it has no alternative. ⁸It has replaced the darkness, and the darkness has gone.” (ACIM, W-88.1:2-8)
For Lesson 76: I am under no laws but God’s*.
”²Here is the perfect statement of my freedom. ³I am under no laws but God’s. ⁴I am constantly tempted to make up other laws and give them power over me. ⁵I suffer only because of my belief in them. ⁶They have no real effect on me at all. ⁷I am perfectly free of the effects of all laws save God’s. ⁸And His are the laws of freedom.” (ACIM, W-88.3:2-8)
* The Course defines “Him[God]” as an impersonal, formless, and infinite principle of pure Love. Substitute whatever term that resonates best and allows you to receive the message. God’s will for us is happiness.
** Salvation is simply the choice to let go of guilt and see the world—and everyone in it—through the eyes of love, thereby waking up from the dream of separation.
*** A grievance is anything that overshadows, blocks, or disconnects me from my true Self: love, peace, and joy. It’s the insane decision to hold onto the chains (the past) because we’re afraid that letting them go would mean disappearing into a light we don’t yet trust.

Message
From previous reviews:
- I am the light of the world.
- My function is to light up the world with this light.
- I recognize and acknowledge the light in everyone.
- I act as the light I am—by being happy and doing what makes me happy, as Love would have me do.
- When fear or grievances diminish my light, I remember who I am: Love, which transforms all grievances.
- The ego-mind creates the grievances that hide my light; my True Self saves me from them.
- Knowing this, I choose between hiding my light or shining it.
- I can always ask for and receive Divine help so I can see and shine the light.
Today we add two more:
- The light has come
- I am under no laws but God’s
One of the key principles that took me a bit to grasp was the idea that we don’t have to look for peace, or light, or joy, or any of those things—they are already and always there. Our ego-mind—who I call Earnest—blocks our access to them, like a veil or a dirty window, creating an illusion of truth.
Why? Because Earnest wants to protect us. Which is also an illusion. It really wants to protect itself—to keep it safe and comfortable. Anything we’re wanting to do or be that takes us out of our comfort zone can trigger Earnest into creating yet another illusion.
When we fall under the spell of the ego’s illusions, we are following the ego’s law. How can we tell? By asking ourselves: How does this make me feel? If we feel fear, stress, anxiety, and the like, we’re under the ego’s law.
Once we recognize this, we can instantly ask to see/feel this differently. Essentially what we’re asking is to have the veil removed or the dirty window cleaned so that we can return to our natural state of peace, love, and joy.
In other words: God’s law.
For instance, yesterday, we had an errand to run in a town over an hour away. As we reached the outskirts, the traffic slowed to almost a crawl. At first annoyed, I centered myself and released it. It occurred to us that the traffic was probably due to a “no kings rally”.
While some vehicles stormed off as soon as they could, others, like us, honked our horns and waved in support of their efforts. The exchange of support and joy from the crowd uplifted us all. While on the surface it may have looked like a protest, in reality, we saw and experienced peace, love, and joy.
It’s worth repeating in simpler terms:
The peace, love, and joy—God’s law—we seek, is already there within us. Just remove the ego’s veil.
“Today’s lesson is the perfect statement of our freedom. We can listen to consensus reality. Make up laws. Give them power. But as Lesson 88 reminds us, consensus reality is dead wrong.”
