Lesson 093: ”Light and joy and peace abide in me.”

AI Reframe: Clarity, joy, and peace live within me.

Suggested Exercise:
Do the practice at the top of each hour, for five minutes. “Begin by stating the truth about your creation [who you are]”:

Light and joy and peace abide in me.
My sinlessness is guaranteed by God*.

“Then put away your foolish self-images, and spend the rest of the practice period in trying to experience what God* has given you [light and joy and peace], in place of what you have decreed for yourself.”

For the shorter practices, repeat these thoughts each hour:

Light and joy and peace abide in me.
My sinlessness is guaranteed by God*.

Message

The first image that came to mind with this lesson is a scene from “Friends” where Joey comes into the apartment wearing all of Chandler’s clothes.

Why this image? Because this is what we do when we “wear” layer-upon-layer of self-induced, meaningless thoughts about ourselves that hide our light, joy, and peace. It’s ridiculous, impractical, and uncomfortable.

The lesson starts with examples:

“You think you are the home of evil, darkness and sin. You think if anyone could see the truth about you he would be repelled, recoiling from you as if from a poisonous snake. You think if what is true about you were revealed to you, you would be struck with horror so intense that you would rush to death by your own hand…”

“These are beliefs so firmly fixed that it is difficult to help you see that they are based on nothing… Today we question this.” (ACIM, W-93.1:1–3:1)

Raised in a strict religious household, we were told repeatedly that we came into this world as sinners. Our faults were pointed out more than our gifts. As soon as we were old enough, they required us to go to confession, even when we weren’t sure what we’d done that was “sinful.” All it did was confuse me. Half the time I’d make something up just to fulfill the obligation—which, right there, is a lie. A sin, in the Church’s eyes. But really, it trained me to see only the “bad” things I did, never the joyful.

With each disdain, put-down, or admonition, I put on another layer of clothing—diminishing my light, joy, and peace further.

But with today’s lesson and practice, we get to question all of this. It guides us to our Truth.

“The self you made is not the [True Self]. Therefore, this self does not exist at all… It is neither bad nor good. It is unreal, and nothing more than that.” (ACIM, W-93.5:1-9)

The lesson closes with:

“You can do much for the world’s salvation** today. You can do much today to bring you closer to the part in salvation that God* has assigned to you. And you can do much today to bring the conviction to your mind that the idea for the day is true indeed.” (ACIM, W-93.11:5-7)

Today, we are encouraged to remove the excess clothing and embrace who we truly are: light, joy, and peace

* The Course defines “Him[God]” as an impersonal, formless, and infinite principle of pure Love. Substitute whatever term that resonates best and allows you to receive the message.

** The Will of God is for our happiness.

*** Salvation is simply the choice to let go of guilt and see the world—and everyone in it—through the eyes of love, thereby waking up from the dream of separation.

“It delights me to see the two of us clowning around, being goofy, abiding, as Lesson 93 suggests, in light and joy and peace.”
