Lesson 099: ”Salvation is my only function here.”
AI Reframe: My purpose is to remember and extend healing.
Suggested Exercise:
For the first five minutes of each hour—or whenever feasible—sit quietly to feel the truth of today’s lesson. Begin with saying this:
Salvation is my only function here.
Salvation and forgiveness are the same.
They are one and the same in that with forgiveness* comes salvation**. And what remains is peace eternal and the Will of God***—our happiness.
Then present your grievances, sins, and thoughts along those lines to the Source where they can be brought into the light. Where truth can expose them for what they are: illusions. And as such, they are forgotten because in eyes of the Holy Spirit they never existed—they can not withstand the truth.
For each of our “illusions” we can declare:
Salvation is my only function here.
God still is Love, and this is not His Will.
From the lesson: “⁴Unshaken does the Holy Spirit look on what you see; on sin and pain and death, on grief and separation and on loss. ⁵Yet does He know one thing must still be true; God is still Love, and this is not His Will.” (ACIM, W-99.5:3-5)
* Forgiveness is an illusion with a purpose: it leads us away from other illusions and towards the light. It bridges the gap between illusion and truth. Illusions are anything the ego-mind has created that leads us away from truth, away from peace, love, and joy.
** Salvation is simply the choice to let go of guilt and see the world—and everyone in it—through the eyes of love, thereby waking up from the dream of separation.
*** The Course defines “Him[God]” as an impersonal, formless, and infinite principle of pure Love. Substitute whatever term that resonates best and allows you to receive the message. The Will of God is our happiness.
Message
God’s will for us is happiness through peace, love, and joy. His will is inherent in us. Nothing—absolutely nothing—can take that away. From our ego-mind’s point of view, we may seek happiness outside ourselves. We forget. Forgiveness and salvation remind us otherwise.
Our grievances are self-induced. They don’t take away our happiness—they overshadow it, blocking our connection to what is already there, like a dirty window blocking a beautiful landscape. Forgiveness and salvation wipe the window clean.
During the practice, I brought up an old grievance—decades old, from childhood. Every year at our bus stop, we re-enacted The Wizard of Oz. Every year, my best friend at the time had to be Dorothy. She wouldn’t allow anyone else the role. Afraid of upsetting her, we conceded. Just once I would have loved to play Dorothy. Instead, appropriately enough, I played the Cowardly Lion.
Why do I still hold this grievance? That’s the question I put to the Holy Spirit today. Intellectually, I get it. I know it would serve me best to let it go. And yet it’s still there. Waiting quietly for the answer, it came to me: All these years, I thought I was upset with her for not letting me play Dorothy. That kept me in victim mode—no peace there. The reality is, I’ve been upset with myself for not standing up to her, for not pushing hard enough for what I wanted. Fear kept me a coward, a victim.
This shift puts my friend in a new light. She was just being who she was. I was just being who I was at the time: afraid of confrontation and loss of acceptance. Now I can change how I tell the story: back then, I let fear get in the way of going after what I wanted. And that’s okay. I’m at peace with that.
It’s interesting how all these years, a part of me wanted her to apologize for not letting me be Dorothy. With this new perception, I see there’s nothing to forgive and no apology needed. The weight is gone. Therein lies my salvation and my peace.
“We are already good people. We are already given God’s grace. We do not have to earn anything. It’s given to all of us. It’s our natural state.”
