Lesson 101: ”God’s Will for me is perfect happiness.”

AI Reframe: My true nature is meant for joy.

Suggested Exercise:
For the first five minutes of each hour—or whenever feasible—sit quietly to feel the truth of today’s lesson. Begin with saying this:

God’s Will for me is perfect happiness.
There is no sin; it has no consequence.

Give these five minutes gladly, to remove the heavy load you lay upon yourself with the insane belief that sin is real. Today escape from madness. You are set on freedom’s road and now today’s idea brings wings to doors you on, and hope to go still faster to the waiting goal of peace. There is no sin. Remember this today, and tell yourself as often as you can:”

God’s Will for me is perfect happiness.
This is the truth, because there is no sin.

Message

While the theme is happiness, much of this lesson talks about sin and the cause-and-effect of believing—or not believing—it is real. Being raised in a strict religious household, the idea of sin being real was as real as breathing. We were required to confess our sins and do penance regularly.

So the idea that there is no sin seems preposterous, especially since I see people committing what I learned to be sins all the time. Since I struggled with this lesson, I looked elsewhere for a clearer explanation and found it in Alan Cohen’s A Course in Miracles Made Easy:

”We have all felt hurt by plenty of people and incidents, and we all feel guilty about hurting others. While all of these sufferings seem very real and justifiable, ‘A Course in Miracles’ teaches that your true Self, and the true Self of any other person, runs far deeper than the self that experiences pain. “Whatever suffers is no part of me” (W, Lesson 248). No matter what mistakes you have made or others have made against you, your inner being remains perfectly intact, impervious to human error. It was not the act that hurt, but your interpretation of the act. Just as you chose an interpretation that hurts, you can choose one that heals. “I can elect to change all thoughts that hurt” (W, Lesson 284).”

Judging by Cohen’s words, sins are an earth-bound, ego-based illusion that as far as the True Self is concerned, doesn’t exist.

With this new understanding, I was able to do the practice. During it, I needed to address the ego’s resistance towards the idea that sin isn’t real. I said, ‘I hear you, but let’s hear what They have to say about it.’ When I did, I realized that where we are in the Course, we teeter between two opposing ways of thinking: ego-mind and Divine mind.

When we operate mainly from ego-mind, grievances, sin, pain, and suffering prevail. We play either victim or victimizer.

When we operate mainly from Divine mind, peace, love, and joy prevail. We are of the light and see the light in others—expressing God’s Will for us, which is perfect happiness. That’s our mission, should we decide to accept it. Ego-mind says this is impossible. Divine mind says it’s already so.

The big takeaway for me: we cannot be in a sin-based state (guilt, fear, anger) and a happiness-based state (peace, love, joy) at the same time. Therefore, to fulfill God’s Will for us, the concept of sin is not real—it doesn’t exist. Only happiness does.

“The Dude’s will for me is perfect happiness. I’m supposed to repeat this mantra every hour.”
