When I first spotted this image, I thought it was made from stones. Upon closer inspection, I realized that artist, Whitney Krueger, created this compelling mandala from snails [scientific name: helicidae].
In her words, she describes how the piece came to be:
I was…designing labyrinths for an institution in Santa Barbara. That is where the Helicidae was done. There is a large estate with a citrus grove next door to the campus. One can not walk without eventually stepping on a snail. The ground truly moves from the thousands of snails that gravitate to the lemon trees. Unfortunately, the owner uses chemicals extensively to kill the snails. I was distraught witnessing all the carcasses and took some solace in gathering their former homes to create something to contemplate.
In viewing Whitney’s site, I saw many beautiful photographs of her nature creations. I’m already eyeing several of them for future MotD entries. 🙂
Happy Coloring!
