23-116 Hang in There #4

Today’s Mandala Message: Be Determined

This week I’m working through Principles #21 and #22 from Jack Canfield’s “The Success Principles” entitled “Keep Score For Success” and “Practice Persistence”, respectively. I set my intention today to ponder the idea of being determined to make my goals a reality. Canfield shares some stories about people who have hung in there, determined to make “it” happen. Here are three of them:

  • It took Admiral Perry eight attempts before reaching the North Pole.
  • NASA had 20 failures out of 28 tries to send rockets into space.
  • Oscar Hammerstein had five broadway flops before “Oklahoma” which ran for 269 weeks.

The Cambridge Dictionary defines “determined” as: “wanting to do something very much and not allowing anyone or any difficulties to stop you.” I’ve proven to myself many times over the years that when I’m determined to make something happen, I put all my energy into in. Things may turn out differently than expected, but I was determined to take it to its ultimate conclusion.

For instance, I was determined to make my first marriage work. After seven years and some much needed therapy, I was then determined to get a divorce. Since my former husband wasn’t going to help with it in any way, I took care of step along the way until I succeeded 18 months later. I’m happy to report that I have been happily married to my second (and last) husband for 33 years…I was determined to not settle for anything less than what I truly wanted out of a relationship/marriage.

So how about you? When you are determined to make something happen, do you find that it’s more likely to happen? How determined are you about your current goals? What would it take to make you determined?

“Desire is the key
to motivation,
but it’s determination
and commitment
to an unrelenting
pursuit of your goal
– a commitment to excellence –
that will enable you
to attain the success you seek.”
