23-158 Embrace Your Future #4

Today’s Mandala Message: Take Steps to Forgiveness

This week I’m working through Principle #29 from Jack Canfield’s “The Success Principles” entitled “Complete your Past to Embrace the Future”. I set my intention today to ponder the idea of taking the necessary steps toward forgiveness.

Continuing with the forgiveness theme of the past couple of days, Canfield offers 6 steps to forgiveness: essentially, 1) acknowledge the resentments, then 2) the hurts and 3) fears/self-doubts they created, then 4) own your part in it, then 5) acknowledge what you were wanting but didn’t get, and then 6) release it, forgiving the person. He suggests making a list of anyone we feel has hurt us and how. Then, give yourself the time to go through the 6 steps with each one. He didn’t suggest it but I would think adding ourselves to the list would be beneficial as well.

He offers this reminder: “All people (including you) are always doing the best they can to meet their basic needs with their current awareness, knowledge, skills, and tools they have at the time. If they could have done better, they would have done better. As they develop more awareness of how their behavior affects others, as they learn more effective and less harmful ways to meet their needs, they will behave in less harmful ways.

A good mindfulness practice towards forgiveness would be to start with acknowledging the resentments.

So how about you? Are you ready to take the steps to forgiveness? Can you make a list of anyone who you feel has hurt you and how? What would it feel like to release them?

“There is no revenge
so complete
as forgiveness.”
