Today’s Mandala Message: What Does Being Financially Successful Mean to You
This week I’m working through Principle #57 “You Get What You Focus On”. I set my intention today to ponder the difference between being wealthy and being prosperous. Canfield states: “Do you know how much wealth you want? Some of my friends want to retire as millionaires, whereas others want to retire with $30 million or even $100 million. … There is no right financial goal to have. But you do have to decide what _you_ want.”
While this principle focuses on attaining wealth, my focus is mainly about being prosperous. For some of you that may seem like semantics. What’s the difference? For me there is a difference…some of it is my perception and some of it is my understanding of their different meanings.
From an article entitled “Financial Freedom Matters: How are Prosperity and Wealth Related?”posted on CreateWriteNow.com written by Michelle Cornish, she defines the two this way: “Wealth is determined by tangible assets, and is a passive concept. Prosperity is not about passive income, but rather about the totality of life (not just money and assets) and is an active concept. Wealth can be accumulated, but prosperity must be achieved by choice.”
For me, it seems that being wealthy is just about the money without any real regard as to how it was attained. While being prosperous, at least for me, is about thriving and growing by believing in and enjoying what you’re doing, with the attaining of money being a part of the process.
While I have the “thriving, growing, believing in and enjoying what I do” part down, the financial part of being prosperous is lacking. And if I had to guess the reason why, I would say it’s because I have not allowed myself to be financially successful; and I think that’s because of my hang-up about “wealth” (see previous paragraph). Now that I’ve found Michelle Cornish’s article, her definition of prosperity more solidly resonates with me and feels like the key that can unlock the door to being fully prosperous, including financial freedom.
A good mindfulness practice would be to ponder what “wealth” and “prosperity” mean to you.
So how about you? Do you strive to be wealthy? Would you rather be wealthy or prosperous? Does it matter to you either way?
“Prosperity is not just
— Michelle Cornish
about being wealthy,
it is also about being
happy, healthy, and peaceful.
I like to think of prosperity as
flourishing and experiencing life
as your best self.”
