Today’s Mandala Message: The Value of Volunteering (part 3)
This week I’m working through Principles #61 and #62: Give More to Get More and Find a Way to Serve of Jack Canfield’s “The Success Principles”. We continue with more money principles (56-62) and our relationship with it. I set my intention today to ponder yet another value to volunteering. Canfield states: “[One] of the keys to success is building a huge network of relationships, and volunteering lets you meet all kinds of people you would never meet otherwise. Better yet, they’re often the people…who make things happen in your profession and in your community.”
When we first moved to Oregon, we didn’t know anyone. We didn’t have jobs or living arrangements set up in advance. Because we had no children or anyone else depending on us, we were able to just pack up, drive 3,500 miles, and hope for the best. It was my volunteering and joining groups that did volunteer work, that helped me build a ‘network of relationships’. With that, it opened doors to opportunities that otherwise would have passed me by.
This week’s principles are about giving back and being of service. These last three posts also shared how volunteering can be a win-win for everyone. While our intent with volunteering is to be of service to others, it turns out that we are also helped—thus the win-win.
A good mindfulness practice would be to contemplate what volunteering opportunities out there could help you build a network of relationships.
So how about you? How have you experienced the value of volunteering? When volunteering, have you noticed how you are also building up a network of new relationships? Have other opportunities come up for you because of your volunteer work?

not because they’re worthless,
but because they’re priceless.”
