Realism
“the attitude or practice of accepting a situation as it is and being prepared to deal with it accordingly”
Too often we mis-take being realistic as being negative…that chances are, what we are wanting to have happen, won’t happen and we call it being realistic. However, if we honestly assessed how “things” have turned out over the years, more times than not, they’ve turned out positively.
The reality is, is that “realism” is more about being present with what is in order to know what to do or not do next. It’s more about…stopping to be with what is…without speculating or worrying or overthinking it. What are the facts in this moment…what is it we can do right now based on what we know for certain.
For example, if we (in the U.S.) receive mail from the IRS, our first reaction might be to panic before we even open it. A dialog with someone might go like this:
“Oh, no! Why is the IRS sending me a letter?”
“Why are you panicking?”
“I’m sure it’s going to be a notice to audit me.”
“Why do you think that?”
“I’m just being realistic.”
“Realistic?”
“Getting anything from the IRS has to be a bad thing.”
“Well you won’t know for sure until you open it.”
“Oh…the letter is letting me know of a new, free way to file my taxes next year.”
”Soooooo…you’re not being audited.”
”No…I guess I assumed incorrectly.”
”Yes…I guess so.”
Essentially, realism is more about being present with a situation, being clear-headed so as to assess what is, and then, because of that, knowing what to do next…which may be to do nothing until we gain more information.
How about you? Is realism a core value for you?
BTW…here’s what it looked like to begin with …

About the 2024 Mandalas of the Day
Each day I will create and post a mandala inspired by one of 366 “value” words chosen randomly. The objective being to discover for myself which ones would best represent my core values…and by doing so, I hope it inspires you to determine your own.
