Being Skilled
“having the abilities needed to do an activity or job well”
My issue with being skilled is that I sometimes let that be a critical factor in whether to try something new or not. In other words, I have this belief that in order to try anything, I need to be skilled at it first so that I don’t mess it up. The paradox is: how can I be skilled in something if I’ve never done it?
Yes, by all means allow we are encouraged to be as skilled as possible in our desired field…and to definitely embrace striving for excellence. And at the same time, we must allow ourselves to fail, to mess up, or to fall flat on your face for trying something new.
I often encourage people who are wanting to pursue some form of creative activity to, on purpose, make an ugly piece…to consciously know that as you’re making it, it doesn’t matter how it turns out because you are purposefully making it ugly. It is so much fun to do and it takes the pressure off of trying to make it perfect the first time.
Essentially, we’re being reminded that sometimes in order to do something well, we need to know how to mess it up first. It’s amazing how much we learn in the process. Besides, the only way to be skilled at anything is to practice, practice, practice…bc practice makes progress!
How about you? Is being skilled a core value for you?
BTW…here’s what it looked like to begin with …

About the 2024 Mandalas of the Day
Each day I will create and post a mandala inspired by one of 366 “value” words chosen randomly. The objective being to discover for myself which ones would best represent my core values…and by doing so, I hope it inspires you to determine your own.
