Lesson 097: ”I am spirit.”

AI Reframe: I am more than form or story.

Suggested Exercise:
For the first five minutes of each hour—or whenever feasible—sit quietly to feel the truth of today’s lesson. Begin with saying this:

Spirit am I,
a holy Son of God,
free of all limits,
safe and healed and whole,
free to forgive,
and free to save the world.

Or if you prefer a more secular version:

Consciousness am I,
a precious part
of the collective,
free of all limits,
whole and complete,
free to love,
and free to light the world.

From the lesson: “Expressed through you, the Holy Spirit will accept this gift that you received of Him*, increase its power and give it back to you.” (ACIM, W-97.7:3)

* The Course defines “Him[God]” as an impersonal, formless, and infinite principle of pure Love. Substitute whatever term that resonates best and allows you to receive the message.

Message

Today’s lesson pushes the envelope for me with its religious terminology and poetic approach. It’s beautiful, but it doesn’t give me a handle on my day-to-day life. I understand it’s trying to bring us closer to our true reality—our True Self—but the wording throws me off. It reminds me of something someone said years ago in one of our ACIM study groups:

”Words are symbols of symbols.” They tend to water down or distort the truth and purity of a message at its energetic level. Or a word has so many meanings that the message becomes unclear. Take “love.” We use it for objects, experiences, and relationships ranging from platonic to romantic.

Same with today’s lesson, though here the words feel abstract. The essence I deciphered is that we are so much more than these carnal vehicles we inhabit. In ACIM language: we are spirit, part of the collective Holy Self created by God as expressions of Him.

In Michael A. Singer’s The Untethered Soul, he uses “consciousness”—“we are consciousness having a human, bodily experience.” That made “spirit” more relatable to me.

During the practice, I had a vision of deep space and the interconnectedness of everything—which gave me a deeper understanding that I am not just a body. The vision reminded me of the NASA photo from earlier today: the view the Artemis II astronauts had of Earth as they came out from behind the moon.

With that vision, I had a broader, more fulfilling sense of who and what I am—and my limitlessness. I felt expansive, with untethered freedom and joy.

I realized that in our bodies, we are mere specks on Earth. From spirit, these orbs are mere specks in our infinite world. I have the sense that anything I want to be or create is possible and lovingly supported by Self, The Universe, God. To which They would gladly ask—like a server in a fancy restaurant—“What can I get for you?”

“Forget you even have a body. Just rest in the vibrancy of spirit that lives and moves and animates your oh-so-holy self.”
