Lesson 137: ”When I am healed I am not healed alone.”

AI Reframe: Healing extends beyond the individual.

Suggested Practice:
Today we do two 10-minute sessions, one in the morning and one in the evening. With each one we ponder these thoughts:

When I am healed* I am not healed alone.
And I would share my healing with the world,
that sickness may be banished
from the mind of God’s** one Son***,
Who is my only Self**.

From the Lesson:

Let healing be through you this very day. ²And as you rest in quiet, be prepared to give as you receive, to hold but what you give, and to receive the Word of God* to take the place of all the foolish thoughts that ever were imagined. ³Now we come together to make well all that was sick****, and offer blessing where there was attack. ⁴Nor will we let this function be forgot as every hour of the day slips by, remembering our purpose with this thought:”

⁵When I am healed I am not healed alone.
And I would bless my brothers,
for I would be healed with them,
as they are healed with me.
(ACIM, W-137.15:1-6)

*Healed: Correction of the mind, of our thoughts. Correction from the belief that we are all separate from the Divine and all others.

**God: an impersonal, formless, and infinite principle of pure Love. Substitute whatever term that resonates best and allows you to receive the message. The Will of God is our happiness.

***Son of God/Self: Instead of a hierarchical title, this emphasizes our shared humanity and our equal role in each other’s salvation—to see the world, and everyone in it, through the eyes of love, thereby waking up from the dream of separation.

****Sick/Sickness: in the metaphysical sense

MESSAGE

Disclaimer: When the Course talks about sickness and healing, it speaks metaphysically—about our mind and thoughts. By all means, seek medical attention for any physical health concerns. You can go to a doctor and still do the lesson. They are not opposites.

Yesterday’s and today’s lessons teach that thoughts and beliefs which keep us separate from the Truth (that we are all One in the Divine) allow the ego, through the body, to take control of our lives via fear. The Course calls this sickness. These thoughts can sometimes manifest as physical symptoms. Ultimately, they keep us separate and weak.

Healing the sickness—forgiving ourselves and reconnecting to our Divine Self—unites and strengthens us. This is the healing of our thoughts. When this healing happens within us, it automatically heals others, not because of anything they do, but because we now see them through the eyes of the Divine instead of the ego. We see their light as they see ours.

During the first practice, I was surprised by the insight that came up: the thoughts and beliefs in need of healing had to do with how I think about myself. I had a different idea going in, but no—Holy Spirit wanted me to look at myself. Instead of “Physician, heal thyself,” it’s “Maureen, heal thyself.”

In yesterday’s post, using Louise Hay’s How to Heal Your Life, I uncovered several thoughts and beliefs behind some physical symptoms I’m experiencing. They included feeling pissed off, unsafe, and a sense of not belonging.

In the practice, I heard and sensed that I need to heal these thought patterns. As they currently stand, I’m not living up to my full potential. By believing what my ego mind tells me, I’m holding back, hiding out, and limiting myself. Then I wonder why no one is buying my art or signing up for readings.

From this practice, I got the message that the Divine wants me to succeed. It wants me to bring all my amazing ideas to fruition and share the gifts I have to offer. Healing these old patterns will make this happen. And by healing these patterns in me, others will be healed because I will see them in a new light—as people who are waiting for what I have to offer. That it’s safe to put myself and my offerings out there. That it’s safe for me to live fully and with joy. That it’s safe for me to be successful. My healing extends outward.

The lesson puts it this way:

“And as you let yourself be healed, you see all those around you, or who cross your mind, or whom you touch or those who seem to have no contact with you, healed along with you. Perhaps you will not recognize them all, nor realize how great your offering to all the world, when you let healing come to you. But you are never healed alone. And legions upon legions will receive the gift that you receive when you are healed.”

“Those who are healed become the instruments of healing.”

“Lesson 137…aims to prove the story of separation is like my old cheerleading uniform. Way too tight, way too restrictive. I should have thrown it out 30 years ago.”
