Lesson 154: ”I am among the ministers of God.”
AI Reframe: I participate in the unfolding of healing and wholeness.
Suggested Practice:
Five-fifteen minutes, morning and evening, sit with today’s idea:
I am among the ministers of God*.
From the Lesson about our role as ministers of God:
“There is one major difference in the role of Heaven’s messengers, which sets them off from those the world appoints. ²The messages that they deliver are intended first for them. ³And it is only as they can accept them for themselves that they become able to bring them further, and to give them everywhere that they were meant to be. ⁴Like earthly messengers, they did not write the messages they bear, but they become their first receivers in the truest sense, receiving to prepare themselves to give.” (ACIM, W-154.6:1-4)
*God: an impersonal, formless, and infinite principle of pure Love. Substitute whatever term that resonates best and allows you to receive the message. The Will of God is our happiness.
Message
During my recent trip to Paris, I was part of a small tour group at Père Lachaise Cemetery. One of the group members and I started talking about the traumatic life of Edith Piaf, who is buried there and whose grave we wanted to see. That led to a deeper discussion about why certain things happen the way they do. I felt compelled to share a belief I have, without knowing if he’d be open to it. I said, “Something that helps me find peace with uncertainty and not knowing the why of things is to remind myself of a line from A Course in Miracles: ‘Everything is in our best interest.’”
His immediate response was, “You’re the third person in two weeks who has talked to me about the Course.” He got very excited and took it as a sign to learn more. We did our best to focus on the tour while also sharing our thoughts about the Course.
Right there in the middle of the cemetery, I sent him a link to the ACIM website. He opened it immediately, and I showed him where to find the text, workbook, and manual for teachers.
This isn’t the first time this has happened to me, but it’s the first time on foreign soil, talking with a fellow American I just met, in the middle of a cemetery. It was a delightful exchange.
I tell this story as an example of one of the ways we can be ministers of God. Because I had received and accepted the message years ago about everything being in our best interest, I was able to share it with someone I felt would be open to receiving it.
Let me be clear: the Course doesn’t ask us—or expect us—to preach, start a church, or do anything like a traditional religion. The lesson is quite clear. Receive and accept the message for ourselves, then give it. My understanding is that the most effective way to give it is to live it. Not by convincing others, but by being an example of the peace the message brings.
“So whenever I notice my mind settling into a problem state of forgetting to be grateful or worrying about anything at all, I just stop, think of Hobson, and ring the silver bell.”
