Lesson 156: ”I walk with God in perfect holiness.”

AI Reframe: I walk aligned with truth and integrity.

Suggested Practice:
Five-fifteen minutes, morning and evening, sit with today’s idea:

I walk with God* in perfect holiness.

From the Lesson

Who walks with me?” ²This question should be asked a thousand times a day, till certainty has ended doubting and established peace. ³Today let doubting cease. ⁴God speaks for you in answering your question with these words”:

I walk with God in perfect holiness.
I light the world, I light my mind
and all the minds
which God created one with me.
(ACIM, W-156.8:1-6)

*God: an impersonal, formless, and infinite principle of pure Love. Substitute whatever term that resonates best and allows you to receive the message. The Will of God is our happiness.

Message

I admit, this lesson triggered me. I’ve seen too many people—past and present—claim they’re following God’s lead while their actions say otherwise. My concern is the temptation to think you’re listening to God when it’s really your ego. And honestly, I sometimes wonder that about myself.

Which raises the question: how do I know it’s God and not my ego? Here are some practical ways. Does the guidance make you more forgiving or more righteous? More peaceful or more anxious? More inclusive or more exclusive?

The short answer: God’s voice brings peace; the ego’s does not.

Other clues: the ego demands urgency; the Holy Spirit is never in a rush. If others feel judged or diminished by your “holy” actions, you are not walking with God. God’s presence heals, not harms.

The ego’s guidance always involves judgment, guilt, fear, or specialness. God’s guidance leads to peace, forgiveness, and seeing no enemy. If a “divine” instruction increases fear or separation, it’s not from God.

For me, if the voice in my head starts with “You should…” or “I want” or “I need,” I know it’s the ego. When I hear a soft command like “Call your friend” or “Do the mandala of the day” or “Go for a walk”—without a “you” or an “I”—I know it’s from a Higher Source.

The other trigger is the term “perfect holiness.” It makes me think I have to walk around like a saint, doing high and mighty things. It reminds me of priests and nuns from my childhood who made me feel less than for not behaving as they wanted.

But the Course defines holiness not as moral superiority or divine favoritism, but as the recognition that only God’s purpose is real, and that purpose is perfect oneness. “Holiness is the awareness of the Will of God in you as well as in others“—not a claim of being chosen or special.

With that cleared up for me, today’s idea makes more sense:

I walk with God in perfect holiness. I light the world, I light my mind and all the minds which God created one with me.

In other words, walking with God means being my True Self..
