Lesson 179: Review of Lessons 167 and 168

Reframe:  Love is all that is; therefore, life is shared and abundant.

”Let this review become a time in which we share a new experience for you, yet one as old as time and older still.²Hallowed your Name. ³Your glory undefiled forever. ⁴And your wholeness now complete, as God established it. ⁵You are His Son, completing His extension in your own. ⁶We practice but an ancient truth we knew before illusion seemed to claim the world. ⁷And we remind the world that it is free of all illusions every time we say:”

⁸God is but Love, and therefore so am I.

“With this we start each day of our review. ²With this we start and end each period of practice time. ³And with this thought we sleep, to waken once again with these same words upon our lips, to greet another day. ⁴No thought that we review but we surround with it, and use the thoughts to hold it up before our minds, and keep it clear in our remembrance throughout the day. ⁵And thus, when we have finished this review, we will have recognized the words we speak are true.” (ACIM, W-rV.in.10:1–11:5)

With these reviews from 171-180, we’re encouraged to “place faith in the experience that comes from practice, not the means we use. … We use the words, and try and try agin to go beyond them to their meaning, which is far beyond their sound. The sound grows dim and disappears, as we approach the Source of meaning. It is Here we find rest.”

In other words, the “words” are the doorway to experiencing the essence of what the words mean.

Today we take this approach with these two review lessons:

167 There is one life, and that I share with God*. God is but Love, and therefore so am I.
168 Your grace is given me. I claim it now. God is but Love, and therefore so am I.

*God: an impersonal, formless, and infinite principle of pure Love. Substitute whatever term that resonates best and allows you to receive the message. The Will of God is our happiness.

I get what the Course is saying: there is only one life, and that life is shared with God (Lesson 167)—who created me as Itself, from Love. The ego projects a life from its own self-motivated perspective—filled with illusions, uncertainty, fear, grievances, and limitations. We have free will to choose, but since there’s really only one life, the choice is simply to reject or accept it.

Knowing this, choosing the life we share with God should be a no-brainer. And yet… I find myself rejecting it more often than not. Why? Because the ego’s projections seem so real that I unconsciously choose them over reality—I’ve done it so long I’m not even aware I’m doing it. It’s like walking out to my studio and only realizing at the door that I’ve forgotten the key again, even though it was right by the backdoor. The days I remember are the days I’m consciously present as I head out. So saying “I reject it” resonates more strongly than saying “my ego mind is in control.” To me, it means I’m choosing the ego’s so-called life rather than falling prey to it, as if I had no say. It reminds me to take responsibility for what I want. And I want the grace of living in peace, love, and joy (Lesson 168).

If I had to equate where I am in the Course—just about halfway through—it’s the butterfly stage: in the chrysalis, neither caterpillar nor butterfly. In Course language: I know I am not my body or the ego mind, but I’m also not fully accepting myself as a holy creation.

And that’s okay. The Course is a process. As I get ready for the second half, I eagerly await my transition into a butterfly.
