Lesson 186: ”The salvation* of the world depends on me.”

Reframe: My awareness and choices contribute to the collective healing.

Suggested Practice:

From the Introduction to Lessons 181-200:

Our next few lessons make a special point of firming up your willingness to make your weak commitment strong; your scattered goals blend into one intent. ²You are not asked for total dedication all the time as yet. ³But you are asked to practice now in order to attain the sense of peace such unified commitment will bestow, if only intermittently. … And so we start our journey beyond words by concentrating first on what impedes your progress still. …⁴So we now attempt to go past all defenses for a little while each day. ⁵No more than this is asked, because no more than this is needed. ⁶It will be enough to guarantee the rest will come.

Do two 15-minutes practices today.

Ponder these words from the Lesson:

²Forgiveness** is an earthly form of love, which as it is in Heaven has no form. ³Yet what is needed here is given here as it is needed. ⁴In this form you can fulfill your function even here, although what love will mean to you when formlessness has been restored to you is greater still. ⁵Salvation of the world depends on you who can forgive. ⁶Such is your function here.” (ACIM, W-186.14:2-6)

Salvation is to goal of seeing the world—and everyone in it—through the eyes of love, thereby waking up from the dream of separation.

** Forgiveness leads us away from other illusions and towards the light, towards salvation. It’s the changing of our minds away from illusions and towards truth, towards salvation and peace.

Yikes! No pressure!

That was my first thought reading today’s title. Then I remembered this current set of lessons is about going beyond the words, figuring out what impedes us from grasping the meaning behind them, and working our way “past all defenses for a little while each day.”

This reminds me of a therapy session in 1990. I came in—yet again—complaining about something one or both of my parents did or didn’t do. The therapist threw me a curve ball: “What if, before you were born, you chose these two people to be your parents?” My immediate response: “Yikes! What the F*** was I thinking? Why would I choose THESE TWO?”

Then I paused and re-asked from a place of curiosity. “Yeah, why WOULD I choose these two people?” It’s too much to go into here, but it was a major turning point in my therapy and my relationship with my parents.

Looking at today’s lesson with that same curiosity, I asked: “Why and how does the salvation of the world depend on me?”

Here’s what the lesson says:

³It offers your acceptance of a part assigned to you, without insisting on another role. ⁴It does not judge your proper role.⁵It but acknowledges the Will of God is done on earth as well as Heaven. ⁶It unites all wills on earth in Heaven’s plan to save the world, restoring it to Heaven’s peace.” (ACIM, W-186.1:3-6)

³Judge not your value to it. ⁴If God’s Voice assures you that salvation needs your part, and that the whole depends on you, be sure that it is so. … ⁶Yet are the humble free to hear the Voice which tells them what they are, and what to do.” (ACIM, W-186.5:2-6)

My take-away reminds me of the Ram Dass quote: “we’re all just walking each other home.” Per the Course, we do that through forgiveness**. By seeing each other through the lens of love and acknowledging we are all of the One. This is our role, our function. The salvation* of us all and our peace depend on each of us, individually and collectively.

How we fulfill our function is up to us—while knowing God’s Voice leads the way. For me, that means my mandala art—and this year, sharing A Course in Miracles through Mandala of the Day.
