Lesson 193: ”All things are lessons God would have me learn.”
Reframe: Every experience offers insight and growth.
Suggested Practice:
From the Introduction to Lessons 181-200:
”Our next few lessons make a special point of firming up your willingness to make your weak commitment strong; your scattered goals blend into one intent. ²You are not asked for total dedication all the time as yet. ³But you are asked to practice now in order to attain the sense of peace such unified commitment will bestow, if only intermittently. … And so we start our journey beyond words by concentrating first on what impedes your progress still. …⁴So we now attempt to go past all defenses for a little while each day. ⁵No more than this is asked, because no more than this is needed. ⁶It will be enough to guarantee the rest will come.”
Do two 15-minutes practices today.
”God sees no contradictions. ²Yet [we believe we see] them. ³Thus [we have] a need for One Who can correct [our] erring sight, and give [us] vision that will lead [us] back to where perception ceases. ⁴God does not perceive at all. ⁵Yet it is He Who gives the means by which perception is made true and beautiful enough to let the light of Heaven shine upon it. ⁶It is He Who answers what [we] would contradict, and keeps [our] sinlessness forever safe.” (ACIM, W-193.2:1-6)
”These are the lessons God would have you learn. ²His Will reflects them all, and they reflect His loving kindness to [us whom] He loves. ³Each lesson has a central thought, the same in all of them. ⁴The form alone is changed, with different circumstances and events; with different characters and different themes, apparent but not real. ⁵They are the same in fundamental content. ⁶It is this: (ACIM, W-193.3:1-7)
Forgive, and you will see this differently.
“We will attempt today to overcome a thousand seeming obstacles to peace in just one day. ²Let mercy come to you more quickly. ³Do not try to hold it off another day, another minute or another instant. ⁴Time was made for this. ⁵Use it today for what its purpose is. ⁶Morning and night, devote what time you can to serve its proper aim, and do not let the time be less than meets your deepest need.” (ACIM, W-193.10:1-6)

Personally, I’m not a fan of the idea that everything is a “lesson.” It makes me feel like I’ll never get a vacation from school. Can’t I just be? Can’t I just enjoy being here? Can’t I just be happy, like the Course says is God’s Will for us? I suspect this rant is mostly my ego talking.
Pause. Breathe. Centered again, I can address this. If you couldn’t tell, there was no peace, love, or joy in any of that. Hence why I believe it came from my ego.
After mindfully reading the lesson, I see it differently. Though the workbook has 365 lessons, today’s tells us there’s really only one: Forgive, and you will see “this” differently.
What do I need to forgive? In this case, giving up my peace over a grievance about learning lessons. Pausing to see this differently, I gained this insight: all I need to do is notice my current state of mind. Am I fearful or peaceful? Acting out of suffering or love? Miserable or joyful?
If I’m anything other than peace, love, or joy in any situation, the lesson is to forgive—which, in the Course’s view, means seeing beyond the ego mind, seeing myself and things differently. In practical terms, I literally just ask, “Help me see this differently.” Sometimes though, just pausing to take a breath puts me in a state of pondering—stepping back and asking, “What’s really going on here?” That’s more of what happened today. Taking that moment allowed me to know I needed to read the lesson, that it would make better sense once I did.
Today it came with this lesson. The “lessons” I ranted about were me looking at outside symptoms of an inside cause—thinking every situation is yet another lesson I have to learn, which feeds my ego’s view that I’m never good enough.
I now realize it’s really just one lesson, and for me it’s more like a reminder: regardless of the situation, check in with myself. Am I happy or miserable? If the latter, forgive, and you will see it differently.
“Lesson 193 is pretty simple. It promises undisturbed happiness.”
