Lesson 203: Review of Lesson 183: ”I call upon God’s Name and on my own.”
Reframe: I draw on inner guidance and the wisdom that surrounds me.
Suggested Practice:
Overall Approach to the Review of Lessons 181-200:
“Besides the time you give morning and evening, which should not be less than fifteen minutes, and the hourly remembrances you make throughout the day, use the idea as often as you can between them. ³Each of these ideas alone would be sufficient for salvation, if it were learned truly. ⁴Each would be enough to give release to you and to the world from every form of bondage, and invite the memory of God to come again. …
“These practice sessions … are centered round a central theme with which we start and end each lesson. ²It is this:
³I am not a body. ⁴I am free.
⁵For I am still as God created me.
Special thought for today’s Lesson:
183: I call upon God’s Name and on my own.
“The Name of God is my deliverance from every thought of evil and of sin, because it is my own as well as His.”
⁶The day begins and ends with this. ⁷And we repeat it every time the hour strikes, or we remember, in between, we have a function that transcends the world we see. ⁸Beyond this, and a repetition of the special thought we practice for the day, no form of exercise is urged, except a deep relinquishment of everything that clutters up the mind, and makes it deaf to reason, sanity and simple truth.
“…Permit no idle thought to go unchallenged. ³If you notice one, deny its hold and hasten to assure your mind that this is not what it would have. ⁴Then gently let the thought which you denied be given up, in sure and quick exchange for the idea we practice for the day.”
“When you are tempted, hasten to proclaim your freedom from temptation, as you say:”
This thought I do not want. ³I choose instead _____________
“And then repeat the idea for the day, and let it take the place of what you thought.” (ACIM, W-rVI.in.5:1–6:4)

Back in the early ’80s, when I was learning BASIC, I understood everything about programming except variables. A software engineer at IBM took time to explain it: a variable is a placeholder—a box that holds information. The box name stays the same; the contents change.
So if I declare x = 3, x is the box, and it currently holds 3. Later, if I want to use 5 instead, I don’t have to change every instance of x—I just change the declaration to x = 5. Every calculation using x updates automatically.
Why the math? It helps me apply the same logic to the Course’s use of the word “God.” The name God is a variable—a placeholder for what the Course describes as an impersonal, formless, infinite principle of pure love. It’s shorthand. The Course cares less about the word and more about what it points to, so we’re free to use whatever term helps us connect.
Today’s Lesson reminds us that calling God’s Name is all we need to free ourselves from the ego’s illusions. It also reminds us that it’s our name too. We are one with God. We are as God created us: holy, whole, and complete just as we are.
To grasp that last part, I think of myself in this context as my Higher Self. While in a body and with the ego mind still within earshot, I struggle to apply those words to my human self. But I can when I recognize my connection to God and my true Self.
Since first doing Lesson 183 and now its review, I’ve loosened my grip on my old, limited understanding of God. Embracing the Course’s definition lets me call upon God’s Name without the usual triggers. Believing that Name is also my own is still a work in progress, but it feels within reach.
