Texas basket weaver, Donya Stockton, created this award-winning inter-weaving basket which, based on her flickr site, received Best of Sculpture at the Southwest School of Art Annual Faculty and Student Exhibition 2011 and [was] accepted to Latitude, Convergence 2012 in Long Beach, California.
I love how this piece keeps your eyes moving around and around. It amazes me how she took one stitching pattern and blew it apart into separate tendrils AND managed to keep track of it all and where she was going with it, making it all come together perfectly in the end.
[she] began weaving baskets in the 1990’s. Her interests have broadened and today her work is primarily sculptural. She continues to be strongly influenced by her traditional roots…[she] has a degree in Anthropology and Art History from the University of Texas with a focus on Native American Art.
With her creation, Donya shows us how we can take a simple idea and creatively repurpose it into something spectacular.
