“Growth is a spiral process,
doubling back on itself,
reassessing and regrouping.”
— Julia Margaret Cameron
“The spiral in a snail’s shell
is the same mathematically
as the spiral in the Milky Way galaxy,
and it’s also the same mathematically
as the spirals in our DNA.
It’s the same ratio that you’ll find
in very basic music that transcends
cultures all over the world.”
— Joseph Gordon-Levitt
“The human mind always makes progress,
but it is a progress in spirals.”
— Madame de Stael
Today’s MotD reminds us that while it may look like we’re going in circles, we’re actually progressing in spirals. It seems like we keep going back to where we started but in reality we have the advantage of a different, higher perspective with more information this time than we had the last time.
With this insight, we can check in to explore what’s different this time. What have we learned since the last time? Eventually the spiral brings us back to a perspective where we see how we’ve grown, where we’ve made progress, and how we can help others as they progress through their spirals.
We are not going in circles,― Hermann Hesse, Siddhartha
we are going upwards.
The path is a spiral;
we have already climbed many steps.”
