“happy or satisfied about or with something”

I adopted a new-ish system for maintaining our home. I call it OITH…which stands for “order in the house”…because I want to bring order into our home. It’s actually based on my mom’s chore system…each day of the week was a different section of the house.

I despised this system as a kid…esp Thursdays because that was kitchen day. More tasks needed to be done on kitchen day than any other day…which meant it was that much longer before I could go out to play.

Anyway, I digress. I’ve tried all types of chore/task systems…even no system at all, which I called ATSMM (as the spirit moves me…which it rarely did). For decades I resisted the “daily” system because that would mean I’d have to admit that my mom was right. To this day, that still bugs me. Go fig.

Over a week ago, for a different blog post, I asked ChatGPT to list simple, creative ways for doing household chores. One of them was called “themed days”. “Assign specific chores to different days of the week (e.g., Laundry Mondays, Trash Tuesdays) to create a routine and avoid feeling overwhelmed by doing everything at once.” Sound familiar?

Well, since ChatGPT said it, I’m going try it. I set up a chart listing each section of the house, including the yard and then assigned their days. I started last week and I have to admit, it’s working. I’m thrilled on so many levels:

  1. I’m actually happy (even excited…weird) about doing the work
  2. our home is slowly and steadily improving (esp with decluttering)
  3. I’m actually excited to check the chart to see which area I’m working on that day
  4. my overall mood about our home has improved, rather than feeling overwhelmed by it, I’m calmer about the areas that need work because I know that their day is coming soon
  5. I’m learning moderation…I don’t have to do everything in one day (which usually stops me from doing anything at all)…if I’m not able to finish an area, I know I’ll be able to continue with it next week…it’s on the chart.

ALL THAT TO SAY…here’s my example of what pleased looks and feels like.

And to my mom, wherever you are, I’m sure you’re having a great laugh over this with all your sister angels (she came from an Irish family with 10 girls…can you imagine?!?!?).

How about you? Is being pleased a core value for you?

BTW…here’s what it looked like to begin with …

joyfully,

Maureen

About the 2024 Mandalas of the Day

Each day I will create and post a mandala inspired by one of 366 “value” words chosen randomly. The objective being to discover for myself which ones would best represent my core values…and by doing so, I hope it inspires you to determine your own.
