Lesson 159: ”I give the miracles I have received.”

Reframe:  I extend the insights and blessings I have received to others.

Suggested Practice:
Five-fifteen minutes, morning and evening, sit with today’s idea:

I give the miracles I have received.

As said in yesterday’s lesson: every one of us has already received the knowledge that we are a mind, in Mind and purely mind, sinless forever, wholly unafraid, because we were created out of love. We are the Light of God and united in the One.

Miracles occur when we remember this about ourselves, individually and collectively. For today’s practice, be in the presence of this knowledge and allow miracles to be given and received.

Message

I often find A Course in Miracles’ teachings abstract—more prose than practical direction. So I was glad to find the first two paragraphs of today’s lesson stated clearly:

No one can give what he has not received. ²To give a thing requires first you have it in your own possession. ³Here the laws of Heaven and the world agree. ⁴But here they also separate. ⁵The world believes that to possess a thing, it must be kept. ⁶Salvation teaches otherwise. ⁷To give is how to recognize you have received. ⁸It is the proof that what you have is yours.

You understand that you are healed when you give healing. ²You accept forgiveness as accomplished in yourself when you forgive. ³You recognize your brother as yourself, and thus do you perceive that you are whole. ⁴There is no miracle you cannot give, for all are given you. ⁵Receive them now by opening the storehouse of your mind where they are laid, and giving them away.” (ACIM, W-159.1:1–2:5)

The lesson also says, “Christ’s vision is a miracle.” Christ, as I understand it, is the infinite principle of pure love. Further in, it says “[The miracle] comes from far beyond itself, for it reflects eternal love and the rebirth of love which never dies, but has been kept obscure. ³Christ’s vision pictures Heaven, for it sees a world so like to Heaven that what God created perfect can be mirrored there. ⁴The darkened glass the world presents can show but twisted images in broken parts. ⁵The real world pictures Heaven’s innocence.” (ACIM, W-159.3:2-5)

With this in mind, I did my first practice. I asked the Holy Spirit for a visual to help share today’s message. Here’s what came:

I saw a landscape of rolling green hills and valleys. Nearby stood a wishing well, but instead of a bucket to lower and raise, there was a Liberty Bell with a crank to ring it. A person approaches the well and rings the bell. Off in the distance, other bells ring in response.

For me, the bell is a reminder to remember our Truth. The person ringing it is both giver and receiver. They remembered, and they want others to remember too. The miracle received—and the one given—is inner peace. The remembrance of who we really are. Those hearing the bell are awakened from their ego-based trance. With this awareness, they can change their minds and choose Heaven instead of whatever “darkened glass the world” was presenting.

In practical terms: if someone is a discourteous driver, rather than react in anger, we catch that impulse, recognize it as the ego feeling threatened, and choose instead to see the Light in ourselves and in that driver. That shift—the ability to change our minds and see each other’s light—is us giving the miracle we already received. That’s the bell ringing.

“Lesson 159…says there’s no limit to the miracles I can distribute—no sickness unhealed, no lack unsatisfied, no need unmet.”
