Lesson 158: ”Today I learn to give as I receive.”
Reframe: Today I practice reciprocity with awareness and generosity.
Suggested Practice:
Five-fifteen minutes, morning and evening, sit with today’s idea:
Today I learn to give as I receive.
From the Lesson:
”And this you give today: See no one as a body. Greet [them] as the Son of God* [they are], acknowledging that [they are] one with you in holiness.” (ACIM, W-158.8:3-4)
*Son of God: Instead of a hierarchical title, this emphasizes our shared humanity and our equal role in each other’s salvation—to see the world, and everyone in it, through the eyes of love, thereby waking up from the dream of separation.
Message
The lesson starts by telling us what has already been given to every one of us.
“What has been given you? ²The knowledge that you are a mind, in Mind and purely mind, sinless forever, wholly unafraid, because you were created out of love. ³Nor have you left your Source, remaining as you were created. ⁴This was given you as knowledge which you cannot lose. ⁵It was given as well to every living thing, for by that knowledge only does it live.” (ACIM, W-158.1:1-5)
We’ve already received it, so it’s not something we need to—or even can—give. The lesson clearly states what we are to give: to see no one as a body, to see the Light in them as well as ourselves, and to acknowledge our holy connection as one. That’s it.
This idea brings to mind a huge bonfire in a clearing in the woods on a clear, cool, star-lit night. A group of people surround the fire, each holding a candle lit from the bonfire. The more candles lit, the brighter the area becomes, until a warm orange glow radiates through the woods and up into the sky. No words are exchanged. Only feelings of peace, love, and joy are shared.
That’s how I experienced today’s first practice. But now I see the bonfire represents what the lesson says we’ve already been given—not the giving and receiving itself. The bonfire shows a shared, already-lit light. The giving and receiving happen in the recognition of each other’s light, not in the passing of the flame.
This reminds me of the term “Namaste” used in most yoga traditions. Loosely translated, it means: the Light in me sees the Light in you. Granted, the term has been overused over the years and is often dismissed—even ridiculed—as hippie, woo-woo mumbo-jumbo. But if it resonates with you, as it does with me, it’s an easy word to remember to remind us of our Light and connection. We can always choose to say it silently to ourselves as we meet people throughout our day, if saying it out loud is awkward or inconvenient. And of course, use whatever term or phrase resonates best with you.
So how does this relate to today’s lesson title? The answer comes from the lesson itself:
“³This lesson is not difficult to learn, if you remember in your brother you but see yourself. ⁴If he be lost in sin, so must you be; if you see light in him, your sins have been forgiven by yourself. ⁵Each brother whom you meet today provides another chance to let Christ’s vision shine on you, and offer you the peace of God.” (ACIM, W-158.10:3-5)
The language of giving and receiving seems to imply one happens first, then the other. In reality—or in the Course’s view—it’s instantaneous. As I see (give) the Light in you, I instantly see (receive) the Light in me. If it helps, you might think of it more as awareness:
When I’m aware of the Light in you, I’m aware of the Light in me.
The lesson doesn’t distinguish between easy and difficult brothers—the instruction is the same. In practice, it may be challenging. But willingness to see the light goes a long way.
Namaste.
