Lesson 240: ”Fear is not justified in any form.”

Reframe: Fear has no true foundation; it is a choice I can release.

Suggested Practice:

From now on:
One in the morning and one in the evening for however many minutes feels sufficient. Then every hour remember/recite the idea for the day.

Prayer For today:
(feel free to swap out the wording to whatever resonates with you best)

“ How foolish are our fears! ²Would You allow Your Son to suffer? ³Give us faith today to recognize Your Son, and set him free. ⁴Let us forgive him in Your Name, that we may understand his holiness, and feel the love for him which is Your Own as well.” (ACIM, W-240.2:1-4)

OR… “Give me the faith to know that we are all One: whole, complete, and free.”

For Lessons 231-240Salvation is the theme. Read the whole article here.
“The Thought of peace was given to God’s Son the instant that his mind had thought of war. ²There was no need for such a Thought before, for peace was given without opposite, and merely was. ³But when the mind is split there is a need of healing. ⁴So the Thought that has the power to heal the split became a part of every fragment of the mind that still was one, but failed to recognize its oneness. ⁵Now it did not know itself, and thought its own Identity was lost.

Salvation is undoing in the sense that it does nothing, failing to support the world of dreams and malice. ²Thus it lets illusions go.” (ACIM, W-pII.2.2:1–3:2)

From the PART II IntroductionRead the whole introduction here.

Words will mean little now. ²We use them but as guides on which we do not now depend. ³For now we seek direct experience of truth alone. ⁴The lessons that remain are merely introductions to the times in which we leave the world of pain, and go to enter peace. ⁵Now we begin to reach the goal this course has set, and find the end toward which our practicing was always geared.” (ACIM, W-pII.in.1:1-5)

Message

From the Lesson:

Fear is deception. ²It attests that you have seen yourself as you could never be, and therefore look upon a world which is impossible. ³Not one thing in this world is true. ⁴It does not matter what the form in which it may appear. ⁵It witnesses but to your own illusions of yourself. ⁶Let us not be deceived today. ⁷We are the Sons of God. ⁸There is no fear in us, for we are each a part of Love Itself.” (ACIM, W-240.1:1-8)

Easy for the Course to say, right? It’s not dealing with what we’re all dealing with these days. And yet—where does fear get us? Yes, it can sharpen our situational awareness and keep our bodies safe. Valid uses, while we’re in them.

But the Course is pointing to something else: how the ego’s fearful thoughts deceive us and obscure our true nature—peace, love, joy. Take my art. If I’m worried about ruining a piece I’ve spent months on, where’s the peace? There isn’t any. I get tense, my breathing goes shallow. If I’m worried about someone else damaging it, I keep people at a distance. Instead of feeling thrilled that someone wants to see it, I feel anxious. Either way, fear creates suffering.

About a week ago, I started applying something I heard Mel Robbins say. Before she goes on stage, she tells herself she’s excited—which overrides the nerves. I tried that with my art. When I catch myself tensing up, I acknowledge the fear first—bring it out into the open. For anyone who tends to stuff or overlook it, that’s key. If I can name it, I can change it. Then I reframe it as excitement. I say a couple of times, “I’m excited to be painting this piece.” It shifts my mindset from concern about the outcome to openness toward it. Mostly, though, it just calms me down. Almost immediately, my body relaxes and my breathing deepens.

I get that this Lesson is saying fear isn’t justified because not one thing in this world is true—including my art, including my worries about it. Our true selves are already safe, whole, and complete. Until I can fully embrace that, here’s what works for me: notice when fear shows up, no matter how small. Acknowledge it. Then override it with “I’m excited.” As in, “I’m excited for people to see my art.”

I realize this “excitement” reframe is still a compromise—true peace wouldn’t need to override anything. But I’m not there yet. For now, this is where I am with the Course on this topic, and I’m okay with that.

“Fear is deception. Its only job is to prove I am something I could never be. It attests to a world that doesn’t exist.”
