Lesson 161: ”Give me your blessings, holy Son of God.”

Reframe:  I welcome the gifts of love and insight around me.

Suggested Practice:
From the Lesson:

”Select [someone], symbol of the rest, and ask salvation of [them]. ²See [them] first as clearly as you can, in that same form to which you are accustomed. ³See [their] face, [their] hands and feet, [their] clothing. ⁴Watch [them] smile, and see familiar gestures which [they make] so frequently. ⁵Then think of this: What you are seeing now conceals from you the sight of one who can forgive you all your sins; whose sacred hands can take away the nails which pierce your own, and lift the crown of thorns which you have placed upon your bleeding head. ⁶Ask this of [them], that [they] may set you free:

Give me your blessing, holy Son of God.*
⁸I would behold you with the eyes of Christ**,
and see my perfect sinlessness in you.
(ACIM, W-161.11:1-8)

”³Behold [them] now, whom you have seen as merely flesh and bone, and recognize that Christ has come to you. ⁴Today’s idea is your safe escape from anger and from fear. ⁵Be sure you use it instantly, should you be tempted to attack a [this person] and perceive in [him] the symbol of your fear. ⁶And you will see [them] suddenly transformed from enemy to savior; from the devil into Christ.” (ACIM, W-161.12:2-6)

You may want to take a gradual approach to this practice. Pick someone you care about, someone who would be easier to do this practice with. Then pick someone neutral. Then pick someone that often triggers you—although technically, they are not triggering you, reacting to them in a triggered fashion.

* “Son of God” — Instead of a hierarchical title, this emphasizes our shared humanity and our equal role in each other’s salvation—to see the world, and everyone in it, through the eyes of love, thereby waking up from the dream of separation.

**Christ — Infinite Principle of Pure Love

Message

Depending on who you choose for today’s practice, this could be easy or challenging. My sense is that this lesson propels us forward to embracing a key principle in ACIM: we are all of the One with the Divine.

With that in mind, I chose a person who, whenever I hear them speak or see their face, I want to condemn and wish awful things upon—not very ACIM of me, which is why I chose them. Knowing this would be challenging, along with stating the lesson’s idea, I asked the Holy Spirit to help me see them differently, to see Christ.

I admit I went into this exercise thinking I would see this person as they were in childhood—innocent. Instead, as I looked upon them, a translucent being surrounded by soft white light stepped out from the left side. It looked light, and it felt light. I was invited to join them on a park bench for a silent, mind-to-mind conversation. They let me know it was easier to show up this way at first. Then they said, “I showed myself like this so you could have a better sense of my truth when you now look at the body I reside in. If it helps, focus on the eyes. That’s where it will be easier for you to sense me.”

When they returned to the body, I did as they said and focused on the eyes. Everything else about this person’s physical presence became a blur. I was at peace with them. The true test will be when I see them again. But now that I know this about them, it will get easier each time.

As for the second part of the statement—seeing my perfect sinlessness in them—I didn’t have that experience. It was more neutral. I’ll keep practicing with a willingness to accept that truth.

During that silent conversation, I realized I was the one being blessed. For me, blessings are peace—and I felt that on the bench and after they returned to the body.
