Lesson 167: ”There is one life, and that I share with God*.
Reframe: There is one essence of life, and I participate fully.
Suggested Practice:
Spend 5-15 minutes, as well as moments throughout your day, with the idea of today’s idea.
From the Lesson:
”Let us today be children of the truth, and not deny our holy heritage. ²Our life is not as we imagine it. ³Who changes life because he shuts his eyes, or makes himself what he is not because he sleeps, and sees in dreams an opposite to what he is? ⁴We will not ask for death in any form today. ⁵Nor will we let imagined opposites to life abide even an instant where the Thought of life eternal has been set by God Himself.
“His holy home we strive to keep today as He established it, and wills it be forever and forever. ²He is Lord of what we think today. ³And in His Thoughts, which have no opposite, we understand there is one life, and that we share with Him, with all creation, with their thoughts as well, whom He created in a unity of life that cannot separate in death and leave the Source of life from where it came.” (ACIM, W-167.10:1–11:3)
*God/He/Him/His/Lord: an impersonal, formless, and infinite principle of pure Love. Substitute whatever term that resonates best and allows you to receive the message. The Will of God is our happiness.
Message
Here’s how I understand today’s lesson.
I like to think of my relationship with the Divine as being a member of the Divine Committee (DC). The DC includes a Team of Guides and Angels, the Universe, God, and all things of the Light. I realize this isn’t strictly ACIM teaching, but it helps me grasp the text and lessons.
As a member of the DC, I’m its Field Rep in this earthly dimension—fully tethered to the DC. Because I have free will, I can go off on my own. Technically, the Course would say I never actually go anywhere—I only dream I do. So when I choose to dream, that’s when the ego mind takes over, illusions begin, and reality ends. Fear, suffering, and death seem real; peace, love, and joy seem fleeting.
Even when I go too far off course (pun not intended), I’m still loved and supported by my DC, whether I realize it or not. In their own way, they leave breadcrumbs to help me find my way back. For me, that’s feathers in odd places, number patterns, or a line in a movie that feels charged in my body—anything that snaps me out of my ego’s trance.
When I’m within range, I can better hear an Inner Voice that’s not mine. Like yesterday’s lesson: during the practice, I heard the Voice say, “Read the lesson.” When I did, I understood the message better. If I hadn’t listened, I’d probably still be struggling.
From the Course’s perspective, here’s how it describes “one life”:
“We share one life because we have one Source—God, a Source from which perfection comes to us, remaining always in the holy minds which He created perfect. As we were, so are we now and will forever be. A sleeping mind must waken, as it sees its own perfection mirroring the Lord of life so perfectly it fades into what is reflected there. And now it is no more a mere reflection. It becomes the thing reflected, and the light which makes reflection possible. No vision now is needed. For the wakened mind is one that knows its Source, its Self, its Holiness.” (ACIM, W-167.12:1–7)
All of this is to say: our lives are happier and more fulfilling when we awaken to the idea that there’s only one life, and we share that life with Source.
“Life itself is eternal. It pulses, it dances, it continues long after our temp jobs. (as impermanent bodies) are over.”
