Lesson 188: ”The peace of God is shining in me now.”
Reframe: Peace and clarity illuminate my being now.
Suggested Practice:
From the Introduction to Lessons 181-200:
”Our next few lessons make a special point of firming up your willingness to make your weak commitment strong; your scattered goals blend into one intent. ²You are not asked for total dedication all the time as yet. ³But you are asked to practice now in order to attain the sense of peace such unified commitment will bestow, if only intermittently. … And so we start our journey beyond words by concentrating first on what impedes your progress still. …⁴So we now attempt to go past all defenses for a little while each day. ⁵No more than this is asked, because no more than this is needed. ⁶It will be enough to guarantee the rest will come.”
Do two 15-minutes practices today.
”The peace of God is shining in you now, and in all living things. ⁶In quietness is it acknowledged universally. ⁷For what your inward vision looks upon is your perception of the universe.”
“Sit quietly and close your eyes. ²The light within you is sufficient. ³It alone has power to give the gift of sight to you.⁴Exclude the outer world, and let your thoughts fly to the peace within. ⁵They know the way. ⁶For honest thoughts, untainted by the dream of worldly things outside yourself, become the holy messengers of God Himself.” (ACIM, W-188.5:5–6:6)
“Thus are our minds restored with them, and we acknowledge that the peace of God still shines in us, and from us to all living things that share our life. ²We will forgive them all, absolving all the world from what we thought it did to us. ³For it is we who make the world as we would have it. ⁴Now we choose that it be innocent, devoid of sin and open to salvation.⁵And we lay our saving blessing on it, as we say:”
⁶The peace of God is shining in me now.
⁷Let all things shine upon me in that peace,
and let me bless them with the light in me.
(ACIM, W-188.10:1-7)

Message
From the Lesson:
”Why wait for Heaven? ²Those who seek the light are merely covering their eyes. ³The light is in them now. ⁴Enlightenment is but a recognition, not a change at all. ⁵Light is not of the world, yet you who bear the light in you are alien here as well. ⁶The light came with you from your native home, and stayed with you because it is your own. ⁷It is the only thing you bring with you from Him Who is your Source. ⁸It shines in you because it lights your home, and leads you back to where it came from and you are at home.
…The peace of God is shining in you now, and from your heart extends around the world. (ACIM, W-188.1:1–3:1)
This lesson brings to mind the dialogue in The Wizard of Oz between Glinda and Dorothy:
Dorothy: Oh, will you help me? Can you help me?
Glinda: You don’t need to be helped any longer. You’ve always had the power to go back to Kansas.
Dorothy: I have?
Scarecrow: Then why didn’t you tell her before?
Glinda: She wouldn’t have believed me. She had to learn it for herself.
Scarecrow: What have you learned, Dorothy?
Dorothy: Well, I—I think that it, that it wasn’t enough just to want to see Uncle Henry and Auntie Em — and it’s that — if I ever go looking for my heart’s desire again, I won’t look any further than my own backyard. Because if it isn’t there, I never really lost it to begin with! Is that right?
Glinda: That’s all it is!
Scarecrow: But that’s so easy! I should’ve thought of it for you –
Tin Man: I should have felt it in my heart –
Glinda: No, she had to find it out for herself. Now those magic slippers will take you home in two seconds!
Dorothy: Oh! Toto too?
Glinda: Toto too.
Dorothy: Now?
Glinda: Whenever you wish.
…
Glinda: Then close your eyes and tap your heels together three times. And think to yourself, ‘There’s no place like home’.
I’ve seen this movie a hundred times over the last 60–70 years, yet writing it out now got me emotional. Mainly because I finally see it in relation to today’s Lesson. We already have the peace of God. It came with us when we entered this existence, and it will go with us when we leave it.
The line “She wouldn’t have believed me. She had to learn it for herself” really hits home. Earlier lessons only hinted at this truth. Today, no more hinting—just the flat-out declaration. Now that we know this for certain, all we need to do is acknowledge it and let it shine. It’s that easy.
And the part about clicking your heels three times as acknowledgment? Highly encouraged. I have it on good authority that God has a lovely sense of humor.
“What if it really isn’t. What if, in reality, it’s facil (easy)!”
