Lesson 189: ”I feel the Love of God within me now.”

”Our next few lessons make a special point of firming up your willingness to make your weak commitment strong; your scattered goals blend into one intent. ²You are not asked for total dedication all the time as yet. ³But you are asked to practice now in order to attain the sense of peace such unified commitment will bestow, if only intermittently. … And so we start our journey beyond words by concentrating first on what impedes your progress still. …⁴So we now attempt to go past all defenses for a little while each day. ⁵No more than this is asked, because no more than this is needed. ⁶It will be enough to guarantee the rest will come.”

From the Lesson:

”Simply do this: Be still, and lay aside all thoughts of what you are and what God is; all concepts you have learned about the world; all images you hold about yourself. ²Empty your mind of everything it thinks is either true or false, or good or bad, of every thought it judges worthy, and all the ideas of which it is ashamed. ³Hold onto nothing. ⁴Do not bring with you one thought the past has taught, nor one belief you ever learned before from anything. ⁵Forget this world, forget this course, and come with wholly empty hands unto your God.”

“Is it not He Who knows the way to you? ²You need not know the way to Him. ³Your part is simply to allow all obstacles that you have interposed between the Son* and God** the Father to be quietly removed forever. ⁴God will do His part in joyful and immediate response. ⁵Ask and receive. ⁶But do not make demands, nor point the road to God by which He should appear to you. ⁷The way to reach Him is merely to let Him be. ⁸For in that way is your reality proclaimed as well.” (ACIM, W-189.7:1–8)

*Son: Instead of a hierarchical title, this emphasizes our shared humanity and our equal role in each other’s salvation—to see the world, and everyone in it, through the eyes of love, thereby waking up from the dream of separation.

**God: an impersonal, formless, and infinite principle of pure Love. Substitute whatever term that resonates best and allows you to receive the message. The Will of God is our happiness.

Message

When I first did the practice, I struggled to “be still, and lay aside all thoughts.” About ten minutes of trying to make that happen, it occurred to me that I was approaching it through my mind, my brain. Then this Other Voice in me said: “Do it from your heart.”

Once I shifted my focus to my heart center, I felt a mild buzzing of energy—warm, glowing, expansive. I could only hold it for moments at a time; my thoughts kept knocking, not used to being ignored. But each time I caught them, I returned to my heart center. And each time, I noticed a quieter, softer experience that lasted a little longer.

What came wasn’t a definition of Love. It was a knowingness without words.

I’m aware this seems vague compared to my usual posts. But doing the practice showed me that this one needs to be experienced. No words I share will adequately describe it for you. Just focus on your heart center, be still, and receive.
