Lesson 201: Review of Lesson 181: I trust my brothers, who are one with me.

Reframe: I trust all beings as expressions of the same essence.

Suggested Practice:

Overall Approach to the Review of Lessons 181-200:

Besides the time you give morning and evening, which should not be less than fifteen minutes, and the hourly remembrances you make throughout the day, use the idea as often as you can between them. ³Each of these ideas alone would be sufficient for salvation, if it were learned truly. ⁴Each would be enough to give release to you and to the world from every form of bondage, and invite the memory of God to come again. …

These practice sessions … are centered round a central theme with which we start and end each lesson. ²It is this:

³I am not a body. ⁴I am free.
⁵For I am still as God created me.

Special thought for today’s Lesson:

181: I trust my brothers, who are one with me.

“No one but is my brother. ³I am blessed with oneness with the universe and God, my Father, one Creator of the whole that is my Self, forever One with me. (ACIM, W-201.1:2-3)

⁶The day begins and ends with this. ⁷And we repeat it every time the hour strikes, or we remember, in between, we have a function that transcends the world we see. ⁸Beyond this, and a repetition of the special thought we practice for the day, no form of exercise is urged, except a deep relinquishment of everything that clutters up the mind, and makes it deaf to reason, sanity and simple truth.” (ACIM, W-rVI.in.1:1–3:8)

“…Permit no idle thought to go unchallenged. ³If you notice one, deny its hold and hasten to assure your mind that this is not what it would have. ⁴Then gently let the thought which you denied be given up, in sure and quick exchange for the idea we practice for the day.”

When you are tempted, hasten to proclaim your freedom from temptation, as you say:

This thought I do not want. ³I choose instead _____________

And then repeat the idea for the day, and let it take the place of what you thought.” (ACIM, W-rVI.in.5:1–6:4)

Message

Before I even read or practiced today’s lesson, I went for my morning walk. Up ahead and across the street, I saw someone walking in the opposite direction. My first thought was judgmental. A moment later, I recognized that judgment—toward both of us—and remembered what the Course has been teaching me. I looked again and said to myself: “Despite appearances to the contrary, I know this person to be the light of God, whole and complete just as they are.” That shifted my mood and lightened my walk. If they had looked up, I would have said hello—something I had no intention of doing before that declaration.

I know “despite appearances to the contrary” isn’t exactly Course language, and the Course probably wouldn’t endorse it. But for me, it’s a way to acknowledge the ego’s judgment and consciously replace it with truth. In time, I imagine I won’t need it. For now, it helps me move from ego mind to Divine mind.

Later, while running errands, I saw someone else who triggered a judgment. I caught it almost instantly, made the same declaration, and felt the same lightness and calm. I thought: I need to do this more often.

Only when I got home and read the lesson did I realize I’d already been practicing it. I saw the pattern: judgment, acknowledgment of the judgment, correction of the judgment, then stating the truth. Each time, the judgment lifted.

I felt inspired to update my declaration to align more closely with today’s teaching:

Despite appearances to the contrary, I know this person and I are One and the same, united as the light of God, whole and complete just as we are.
