Lesson 212: Review of Lesson 192: I have a function God would have me fill.
Reframe: I have a role in supporting clarity and harmony.
Suggested Practice:
Overall Approach to the Review of Lessons 181-200:
“Besides the time you give morning and evening, which should not be less than fifteen minutes, and the hourly remembrances you make throughout the day, use the idea as often as you can between them. ³Each of these ideas alone would be sufficient for salvation, if it were learned truly. ⁴Each would be enough to give release to you and to the world from every form of bondage, and invite the memory of God to come again. …
“These practice sessions … are centered round a central theme with which we start and end each lesson. ²It is this:
³I am not a body. ⁴I am free.
⁵For I am still as God created me.
Special thought for today’s Lesson:
192: I have a function God would have me fill
²I seek the function that would set me free from all the vain illusions of the world. ³Only the function God has given me can offer freedom. ⁴Only this I seek, and only this will I accept as mine. (ACIM, W-212.1:2-4)
⁶The day begins and ends with this. ⁷And we repeat it every time the hour strikes, or we remember, in between, we have a function that transcends the world we see. ⁸Beyond this, and a repetition of the special thought we practice for the day, no form of exercise is urged, except a deep relinquishment of everything that clutters up the mind, and makes it deaf to reason, sanity and simple truth. (ACIM, W-rVI.in.1:1–3:8)
“…Permit no idle thought to go unchallenged. ³If you notice one, deny its hold and hasten to assure your mind that this is not what it would have. ⁴Then gently let the thought which you denied be given up, in sure and quick exchange for the idea we practice for the day.”
“When you are tempted, hasten to proclaim your freedom from temptation, as you say:”
This thought I do not want. ³I choose instead _____________
“And then repeat the idea for the day, and let it take the place of what you thought.” (ACIM, W-rVI.in.5:1–6:4)

The Course talks about “a function God would have me fill” as if it’s one thing. I know this because I tried to sum it up in one easy statement and couldn’t.
Here’s what I understand our function to be:
- Remember who we are: holy children of God, as He created us—whole, complete, the Light of God.
- Remember what we are: free, more than these bodies, united as one Self with God.
- Remember the Truth: God’s will for us is perfect happiness. His gifts are peace, love, and joy. This world is an illusion. Forgiveness sets us free. The ego mind thrives on fear, limitation, and suffering.
- Remember to ask to see things differently—to see everything and everyone as the Light of God.
That’s a lot for one function. But maybe that’s the point: it’s not a single task but a single shift in perception—remembering.
This morning, that shift in perception got tested. Police officers came to our door: overnight, someone tore down mailboxes on our street, ours included—pole and all. Thankfully, financially, it’s not a hardship. But energy-wise, it’s a couple days of digging, cementing, and rerouting mail. And emotionally, it was distressing. Our neighborhood is usually quiet and safe.
While I talked with the police, I kept repeating one of my go-to ACIM prayers: help me see this differently. Gradually I felt calmer and could think more clearly. As it turns out, next Tuesday is Neighborhood Watch Night—potluck, police safety tips, neighbors gathering to figure out how to prevent this from happening again.
In the big scheme of things, this doesn’t even warrant a newspaper mention. But the Course makes no distinction between big and small disturbances. If we lose our peace to the ego mind’s fears, it matters. Our function is to remember—even mid-disturbance—who we are, what we are, and what’s true.
What was true for me today was that I can know peace instead of this.
