Lesson 220: Review of Lesson 200: There is no peace except the peace of God.

Reframe: True peace comes from alignment with love and clarity.

Suggested Practice:

Overall Approach to the Review of Lessons 181-200:

“Besides the time you give morning and evening, which should not be less than fifteen minutes, and the hourly remembrances you make throughout the day, use the idea as often as you can between them. ³Each of these ideas alone would be sufficient for salvation, if it were learned truly. ⁴Each would be enough to give release to you and to the world from every form of bondage, and invite the memory of God to come again. …

“These practice sessions … are centered round a central theme with which we start and end each lesson. ²It is this:

³I am not a body. ⁴I am free.
⁵For I am still as God created me.

Special thought for today’s Lesson:

220: There is no peace except the peace of God.

²Let me not wander from the way of peace, for I am lost on other roads than this. ³But let me follow Him Who leads me home, and peace is certain as the Love of God. (ACIM, W-220.1:2-3)

⁶The day begins and ends with this. ⁷And we repeat it every time the hour strikes, or we remember, in between, we have a function that transcends the world we see. ⁸Beyond this, and a repetition of the special thought we practice for the day, no form of exercise is urged, except a deep relinquishment of everything that clutters up the mind, and makes it deaf to reason, sanity and simple truth. (ACIM, W-rVI.in.1:1–3:8)

“…Permit no idle thought to go unchallenged. ³If you notice one, deny its hold and hasten to assure your mind that this is not what it would have. ⁴Then gently let the thought which you denied be given up, in sure and quick exchange for the idea we practice for the day.”

When you are tempted, hasten to proclaim your freedom from temptation, as you say:

This thought I do not want. ³I choose instead _____________

And then repeat the idea for the day, and let it take the place of what you thought.” (ACIM, W-rVI.in.5:1–6:4)

Message

With today’s Lesson I’m reminded of a beautifully rendered pen-and-ink drawing my brother created years ago. It’s a serene image inside a home where a couple of children are working on a puzzle, the dad is watching tv, and the mom is washing dishes while viewing this peaceful scene. Next to the sink is a strategically placed bottle of Joy dishwashing liquid. The caption reads: “This too shall pass.”

It was representational of our childhood experience. While it looks peaceful, you could cut the tension with a knife. At any moment, mom or one of us kids could do or say something that would trigger dad’s rage.

To me this describes ego-based peace. Yes, on the surface everything looks and feels fine and yet one shift of the energy could tip the balance to chaos. This is not peace. It’s not even the calm before the storm. It’s living in a constant state of fear. To be honest, I hated this phase of his cycle. I preferred the phase just after he blew up because then we were assured of maybe two or three days of reset before the rage energy started ratcheting up again.

That is not the peace I want. I want the only true peace there is: the peace of God.

The peace that comes from knowing I’m fully loved and supported by God. The peace that tells me all God wants for me is to be happy. The peace of knowing I am not alone, that I am not this body, and that I am free. It’s the peace that reminds me that fear, limiting beliefs, and grievances are all illusions that feed the ego.

I want the peace that regardless of whatever chaos may be going on around me, the peace of God sustains me, guides me, and shows me the way to love and joy.

I’m not there yet. Honestly, I still carry that fear pattern of not wanting to “disturb the bear.” When I notice the tension rising, the practice that shifts my focus is reciting, repeatedly if need be, one of my two favorite ACIM go-tos: “I could know peace instead of this” or “Help me see this differently.”
